Morning high's - what to do?

Every morning when I wake up my blood sugars are fine, almost exactly what they were when I went to bed. I had 10units of levemir on a night and 5 when I first wake up.

I tend to get up around 5-6am most days and don't have breakfast until 10ish. When I go to test at 10 my blood sugars have always gone up by at least 3.

I tried having a little bit of carbs when I first wake up as I read this can 'trick' your body into not dumping a lot of insulin first thing on a morning as you have eaten. However this didn't work.

I then this morning tried having my full breakfast when I got up and was even higher come 10am! I'm only on a 0.5:1 ratio on a morning compared to a 1:1 ratio with tea.

Not sure what to try next - whether to up my background on a night (I never really wake up lower than 8) or on a morning (not sure if this is even working fully between 6 and 10)

Or whether to always have breakfast when I first get up and increase ratio to 1:1?

Any ideas would be helpful!

Is that 1 unit of insulin to 1g of carbs?

TBH if I don't eat breakfast upon waking my bg will eventually go up into double figures by late morning, if you don't get your energy from food for the day ahead then your body will make it's own via the liver, you could try doing some basal testing if you prefer, take a look at the following for a good explanation:

I find exactly the same if I don't eat breakfast when I get up, if I don't really feel like eating I just grab a breakfast bar which keeps my bg right.

Might be worth trying a morning fast and checking if your basal needs adjusting ? Best breakfast is bacon and eggs, any excuse for a fry up lol !!

I personally find I am really insulin resistant in the morning so take 2 units per 10g of carb which I then change in the afternoon to 1.5 to 10g, so adjust my QA to suit, this may also be your issue too ?

Good luck it's always work in progress !! ;)

Whatever works Moz, personally I can't function on a morning without a good breakfast to start the day :)

Get a pump so you can adjust the basal to sort out the dawn phenomenon. I have something quite similar and it was what I needed to get funding.
