Morning highs!!

As @CarbsRok has said, T1D is a condition that you need to grasp with both hands and manage yourself. I am left with the impression that your DSN hasn't really allowed you to do this and you therefore are unclear as to how you do it. It is worth asking them to help you take control yourself as you will struggle without doing so. Unless of course you are happy to delegate that responsibility to somebody else who only ever has second hand evidence to work from!

Sorry, I haven't been advised by my pump specialist nurse to do a basal test so I am not doing it without her advice. But sometimes things are not as easy to some as they are to others.

You adjust the basal rate 2 hours before you notice the change in bg levels.

I'm much like others, if I don't eat on waking I get a liver dump and bg levels will rise into double figures within an hour or two, by eating breakfast and bolusing accordingly I can best control bg levels and stay within my bg target range.

If yours is a touch of DP @myarnton1 then just use a different basal programme for weekends if you do like to sleep later, better to do that than wake up high and having to use corrections boluses.

myarnton1 - please take these posts positively, everyone is trying to help you understand how important Basal testing is.

It's not your fault your DSN has not given you guidance on this yet but hopefully you're now armed to be able to ask the right question. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

i make myself eat as soon as i get up otherwise i go high.
however, if i really dont want to i take about 1u bolus and that stops any rise until i am ready to eat

My DP happens wether I eat or not. So I don't. My basal is set to increase an hour before I get up then more for half an hour after I'm up. I correct with a bolus because DP is predictable in that it will happen but the amount and length can change.
So tim2000 is right. You need to be taught how to deal with it as you need to be able to adapt.

I used to have to have at least double my rates from at least 4 hours before getting up... Mine wasn't DP but on waking....so if I had a lie in I would have to plan that the night before or if Hubby changed shifts I'd have to change profiles....
So glad now that like @robert72 back on MDI and I just give a unit bolus when I wake up. I don't have to worry or plan the night before whether having a lie in or what shift hubby working...

It is important to know whether your phenomenon is due to dawn or waking.. And the only way to find out is by basal testing.

I was never a breakfast eater..so found basal testing really easy and also did it from 3am 5am and 7am on one day and 4am 6am and 8am on another to get a full picture..for all my different profiles needed on the pump.

Now its so much easier back on Mdi.. Having stopped work back in September and having had some weird getting up times and now trying to have 4 or 5 very small bite size meals rather than one meal a day... Life is forever pinging little things to give more reason for testing.. Mines now constant bolus testing.. But at least I know my basals are right...

Nobody is criticising... Crikey... 30 years for me and this is pretty much my first week of bolus testing!! Never really ate meals before... And I'm over 50 years of age !

So people are advising to basal test.. Thats all it is.. Nobody is criticising... Or at least we aren't meaning too!!

Yes, we are all different... But there is one sure fire way of getting pump and body working together...

People aren't criticising, just suggesting that basal testing is the way forward to help you....

You'll get there, but atleast you know what others do...

I'm sure you're not the only person who hasn't heard of basal testing @myarnton1 I know the links for it have been posted many times for many people

You've done really well getting your HbA1C down, so don't be discouraged. It's good you have a DSN who works with you. I'm sure you'll improve your morning highs soon

@myarnton1 my post was just to point out the unpredictability in dp. I bang my head against a wall sometimes trying to sort the b@@@er out and I've been aware of it for 3 ish years.
Don't take any if the advice as a criticism but as a way to bring up 'stuff' you weren't aware of to your fan.

the only basal i test or have tested is over night. i have a flat rate basal in the morning then afternoon, i then adjust my boluses to suit my eating and day. things change. it works for me. you have to do what works right for you. however, if you dont want to eat i would def suggest a bolus as soon as you get out of bed, have to work on what size bolus through trial and error and remember if it's a stressful morning you may need even more!
