Hi Everyone i just registered.
Ive had diabetes for over ten years, im 26.
Its all been pretty un-eventful so far!
Recently im having trouble with my morning blood sugars, They are fine when i go to bed
i have tried going to bed with them at 5-6mml, tried them higher at 8-10mml......
so i was sure it wasnt hypos. Ive checked my insulin is in date etc etc....ive tried adjusting my evening insulin (im on novorapid 3x day and levimir x1 day)
Its made no difference..im waking up with levels at 20mml some days.
I am baffled now, have just been reading about 'the dawn phenomenom' and was wondering if
this could be the reason? has anyone else had this problem?
Its out of the blue for the last couple of weeks.
My levels are fine during the day

There is a lot of info on this subject around the site. I had this sort of trouble with Khaleb not long ago. I even checked Khaleb (my son) several times through the night to find that he would be 5ish mmol at 4am and by 6.30am he would have a bsl of 12mmol. I did increase his Levemir by half a unit as it seemed to just be running out. Khaleb has his Levemir split morning and night and this makes it easier for us.

Khaleb's been a bit ill so I think that has been why he's had some extra insulin needs.

Good luck.

Hi and welcom to the forum

Firstly are these highs every morning?

Are you sure that it's not night time hypo's?

I would to a couple of night-times readings, around 2-3am as this is the time our hormone activity is at it's lowest ebb and our BG's are generally at there lowest point..

It is also worth extended this testing through out the night, you don't have to wake up every hour on one night, but can spread it over different nights, so one night you test at 10 and 11pm, next night or in a couple of nights test at 12pm and 1am, etc or you can do it in larger blocks this will give you a picture of whats happening to your BG's over-night and as you approach wake up, if DP then you should start to see you BG climb from anywhere around 4am onwards to mid morning...

Other reasons, could be that your levimer isn't lasting a full 24 hours, so take a look at what time you are injecting your levimer, if it seems that it isn't lasting 24 hours, you have two options, either move the injection time around to time the tail off better or split the levimer into 2 injections to give a more even spread... Spliting the levirmer injection can help with the effects of DP as it you can increase the dose to cover DP without overloading yourself later..

Other things to consider, is has your routine, exercise or activity changed in the day, or are you eating different types of foods more so teatime onwards.. As these can effect our BG's for a lot longer than one might think..

Finally do you carb count, and have you've done a DAFNE type course?

P.S

I like the mastiff he/she looks lovely, I have two dogs of my own, a German Shepherd and a German Shepherd cross Corgi, all German Shepherd (long haired) with little Corgi legs with dropped ears :D

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions, i will try testing in the night and see whats happening, and go from there.
It is every morning.
This morning they are 14mml. they were 7 when i went to bed.
Hopefully if i test in the night i can make some adjustments to my insulin/food where needed.

Thanks she is a Bullmastiff called Summer and shes 2! i love my dog dont know what i'd do without her :D

Hi Rachel,

I've only recently found out that I'm Type 1 (01/03/2010) and am also on Levemir & Novorapid. I'm getting it under control which is great but had the same issue as you for the morning high. I spoke to my diabetic nurse and she suggested splitting my Levemir and taking it in two doses as opposed to just once a day. The nurse is a big fan of levemir but has said that it often doesn't quite cover the 24hrs so I now take half at 9:30am (ish) and the other at 9:30pm (ish) and it seems to have done the trick.

Previous morning readings were: 10.2, 9.4, 11.3, 9.0, 9.7, 10.2
Having changed to half & half levemir twice a day: 5.9, 5.3, 6.0, 7.2, 6.8, 5.7

Hope this helps

Best regards

Dave

Hey im also newly diagnosed since feburary. My levels were all over the place for about 2 months, there only settling in the last month thank god. Im also on levemir twice a day and novorapid. While my day and bed time level were below 9 which is great. mY morning levels were above 11 so i started giving myself an extra unit of levemir for my evening dose and than seems to have really helpled, there below 9 now which im happy about.

Hi,

I suffer from 'dawn phenomenon' where you morning bsl is caused by a rebound from a night hypo which didn't wake you up. Would it be possible to speak to your consultant and find out if it would be worth you wearing a Continous Glucose Monitor? This is a device you wear for about 3 days and the care team could see where you bs is during the night and give appropiate advice.

I solved mine by having a 2 yr old that wakes you up at 5am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
