Quick run down.

Was diagnosed in 2008, was given Metaformin and Glipizide, along with diet and excising (Gym) 3 times a week, Cycling at the weekends, i have not had my levels less that 11 ever.
So i spoke to my Doctor I decided to take this by the scruff and tell him that i am not really convinced that this is working. We working together and i was happy to move to injecting. Levemir pen
I am now injecting insulin since last Wendesday started on 10 units and to increase by 2 units day until the levels start to get to the ideal levels. I am now at 20 units, I am still getting high readings after two hours after eating. I have a chicken salad for lunch, no dressing, no carbs.. level at 2pm today, 22.8.

My question are these:

Do i keep going until i noticed a change with a single injection- how much can i inject in one go?
I have noticed that I feel hungry towards meal times, ravenous, at yesterdays evening meal is this normal?
I have been feeling very drowsy in the evenings around 9pm and fall asleep very quickly is this also normal?

If your just giving the levemir in a single dose then it may not be giving you a full 24 hour coverage, I would contact your diabetes team and ask for guidance whilst explaining what your bg levels have been like.

Thanks, I have just started, week tomorrow, I have an appointment on Thursday with my Doctor, and will raise these questions with him.

Hi. My DN started me on Levemir once a day but could see from my readings within a month that I needed a Bolus insulin added which she did. We agreed to keep the Levemir at once a day even though it runs out after 18 hours or so; you can vary the Bolus for the various meals to compensate for the Levemir running out of steam (or split the Basal dose adding an injection)

Thanks guys, I gave the doc a call yesterday, he asked no to increase the dosage anymore, he suggested he will put me back on to Glipizide along with the Metaformin. I am seeing him today and will get a better understanding on what to do next.

I wonder why he doesn't think there is room to improve the response from the insulin? I think there may be, and if there is an improvement, Glipizide wouldn't be needed. This is based on the info at Blood Sugar 101 that I linked to above. Oh well, there's still time for you to gather more info and discuss everything with him and your diabetes team. As always, seek advice from your HCPs.
