Hi all. I thought i'd share what happened today. I am following the LCHF diet strictly and my health markers are fantastic. However i got a wee bit worried that i wasnt getting enough vitamins so i bought mulitivitamin and mineral pills.

Took one for the first time this morning and an hour later i was ill. Sweating...flushing hot and cold....palpitations....nausea and shaking. Telephoned NHS24 for advice. Doc says....ohh well it sounds like u dont need the vitamins....ur body is rejecting the extra. Drink loads of water and they will be excreted in urine. I did and they must have coz i feel better now

Well the moral of the story i guess is that on a LCHF diet u get plenty of vitamins and minerals!

That's really an irresponsible way (for a doctor) to determine you are getting plenty of vitamins and minerals. I hope s/he was joking.

Only water soluble vitamins and minerals can be excreted in urine. Fat soluble vitamins can build up, although more usually after months eg vitamin A overdose from eating nothing but livers of polar bears, seals and huskies by polar explorers, for example.
I remember a certain Carrot diet that caused a few problems. My multivit is typical Superrmarket strength, so are relatively harmless. I never suffered problems, but watch out for Vit B since it is possible to overdose on some of them, Folic acid and Iron tabs can also be problematic.

Hi, I`m not too well up on the vitamins but I do know that lchf can lead to mineral deficiencies because your body flushes water as opposed to retaining it and minerals can be lost this way. The only thing I take at the moment is magnesium citrate at 300mg per day. Magnesium controls your heart rythm amongst other things and I had been having arrhythmia for a while, I`ve only been taking mag for about 5 days but it seems to have settled somewhat.

Sounds more likely you had a reaction to an ingredient in the tablet.

I wouldn't have another. And make a note of the ingredients. If you ever have another similar reaction to anything else you may be able to identify the culprit.

And yes, i would complain. The info given out was incorrect and irresponsible.

- but there is no reason why you cannot use another brand, and supplement as appropriate.

Thank you all. I couldnt actually believe what i was hearing from the so called Doc. Yes i wont take any more and will definitely complain @Dark Horse & Brunneria. Glad ur doing better @chri5. I will go see my GP anyway...he 'unofficially' mentioned the LCHF diet to me by someone called Trudi Deakon i think.

Good to see some GP mindsets could be coming round to the idea of LCHF diets

I would if you just sit down one day and write down foods and look up their nutritional value.
I have had to do this as once again my diet has changed and now 95% is blended food or soup. So was wondering about my vitamins and minerals. Found a brilliant website that lists everything for protein and fibre too as I have to have minimal fibre. I work out top heavy on A, C and E... But b12 is minimal.. However I have B12 checked every 3 months and yet again it is over the target ranges. This may yet again prove to be cancer related.. But will have to wait and see if cancer does reappear in future...
It is pointless taking vitamins unless you need them... I no longer take the multivitamin.. But still continue with oregano for blood and omega 3, plant sterol to keep cholesterol low and astragalus to try and fight cancer off naturally as can't tolerate NHS horrible tablets.

Well worth spending time looking at what you eat to make sure your vitamins and minerals are balanced.

No i havent seen the book @Brunneria....oh its Deakins...oops lol! When GP mentioned it i couldnt see past LCHF and when i googled i found this forum first and it was full of info Yes after reading how GP's dont advocate LCHF it sounds like my GP cares more about his patients than anything else Thank you @donnellysdogs....that is a great idea!! I will do that!
