Mum to Type 1 son, saying hello

Hi there, I have just joined this forum as i thought it might be nice to speak with other people in a similar situation.

I have to admit to being totally ignorant to diabetes, that is until my young son was admitted into hospital after being diagnosed as having Type 1 diabetes :(
That was January 2009 - he had just turned 8 years old. As a family at the time, we took it well, I don't think the reality of it really hit home - my son has been an absolute star - he takes his injections and does his finger pricks with no moans whatsoever. It is only really the last couple of months that I think it has finally sunk in and I am struggling. I worry 24/7 - I worry about now, I worry about the future and I worry every night about the possibility of him having a severe hypo while sleeping - I think the negative thoughts are taking over tbh :(

Anyway, this is one of my reasons for joining this forum, to share my feelings with others who will be able to empathise with how I am feeling, as people who do not have direct experience of diabetes sometimes find it hard to understand.

I look forward to getting to know you all x

Hi.
Welcome to the Forum. Have a good look round and any questions just ask, there is usually someone around with some answers.

Of particular interest to you and your Son may be the 'Diabetes Youth Club' section where you will find plenty of Mom's and Dad's keen to offer advice and support. They visit at various times of the day and night.

Hello and welcome. I am a mum of 3 children of which 2 have type 1. They were also diagnosed in 2009! I totally understand how you feel, although I tend to go through periods where I don't tend to worry as much.

I have found this site invaluable, and I'm sure you will too. There are plenty of parents on here to offer advice and support and people who understand what looking after a diabetic child entails. Leggott.

Hi there,

My son was diagnosed in 2007 and spent time in intensive care due to his extreme blood sugar. I didn't ignore that he was ill but it just all happened so quickly because of his age.

I go through stages where I worry a lot and then times when I am quite calm. Usually when I am panicked there is good reason and his levels are unstable. I worry while he is away from me but try to keep it all in perspective. I try not to make decisions based on diabetes but anything we decide to do requires some careful planning and packing.

It is always good to be in touch with other parents.

Hi Esselle,

I don't have a child with diabetes but I can imagine how scary it is for you. Our children are so precious aren't they.

By learning as much as you can and educating your child as you go, you will be doing the absolute best thing for him. He will learn how to control his condition for when he is older. Keep up the good work. :)
