Muscle Cramps from exercising

Any advice about prevention and treatment? I’m 59 year old. Type 1.
Recently when I go out cycling I have developed severe cramps in my quads. I haven’t got them going only about 20 km ride but on longer rides I have got them so bad that I have almost had to contact emergency services to get home. It takes several days for my legs to recover.
 
Electrolytes? Dehydration? Just a couple of thoughts. Could explain why it’s ok on shorter rides but not longer.

I’ve had a couple of instances of something similar when swimming - cramp so severe that it’s taken a few days for the calf to recover and it’s certainly not pleasant!
 
What are your blood sugars like when this happens?
I sometimes wake in the night with cramp and find I also have low blood sugars.
