Hi.
For those that haven't read my bit on the introduction board I'll give a quick intro again.
I was diagnosed type 2 Wednesday (28th April 2010). I had my first appointment with the Diabetes nurse because of my symptoms.. the usual, thirst, constantly pee'ing and unexplained weight loss. Anyway, after discussing Diabetes in general she checked my blood/sugar level and it was 26.5 and still rising as I'd only just eaten.
I now have to take Gliclazide (80mg) for a week and cut out ALL sugars possible until I've seen her again next week..
I wonder what the future holds? By that I mean how will I have to control it?
Watch this space for my story! :D

I too have only recently been diagnosed as type2 my level was 25.3 but I find it all a mine field with the food - eating more salads have porridge and one of the them small yogurts in th porridge (made with water) I was diagnosed on 23 March and didn't get to see the Diabetic nurse until 19 April and really felt at a loss. Reading this forum has helped a lot seeing how others cope what problems they have etc it really does help. I keep geting bouts of the runs with all the fruit, veg and salads that i am eating. I do feel quite depressed about it all though as I have a blood condition called polycycthemia Vera its where you produce to many red blood cells and they gradually get larger and at first i had to have a pint of blood removed every month then 2months and for a while every 3 months but the last few times it has been reduced to 2 months again. then last feb 09 i was diagnosed with bladder cancer and had the tumour and a couple of small ones removed and chemo but now it looks like its coming back it just seems one thing after another. I haven't get got my BG stable either :( and confused

Hi, am new to this forum so hp no one thinks I'm butting in :!:

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 5 years ago now and its never easy to get to grips with diabetes. I have periods when the BS levels are ok and then it all seems to go to pot, and yet I'm doing exactly the same as I have before! We just have to keep going and keep trying as best we can, and remember tomorrow is another day and it may just get betta :)

wish u good luck, and if I can be of help don't be afraid to to get in touch

Not at all...

At last, for the first time in about 6 weeks that raging thirst is dying away a bit. It's not totally gone yet but I can actually go for a couple of hours or so now without guzzling water.. YIPEE!! :D

Hello Jack,

The key is to get your BG under control ASAP.

Following the excellent tips and advice you will glean from this forum will help you do that in no time at all.

In my case I lost 2 and a half stone in weight, banished my junk food/chocolate cravings and got my BG consistently below 7 (which was the target set for me by the DN) all within 2 or 3 months.

If I can do it, any can. :D

Hi Sue and welcome to the forum. :)

Sorry to hear of the struggles you are having with all those health issues. Poor you! :(

I hope that you read the post above your original post and followed the link through to 'advice for new T2s' as that will really help you. If you can get a handle on the T2 bit that at least will be something you can do for yourself. 8)

Let us know how you get on. :)

To newbies
Do ask your medics to do tests for correct diagnosis. It does matter if You have T1 or T2 diabetes. They are quite differnt and need different treatment.
there is a strong tendency for the medics to diagnose by age. ie mature person = T2: child =T1
This isn't always correct.
T2 tends to come on slowly, over years and goes with weight gain. T1 comes on fast, over weeks and goes with weight loss. These are simplified, but more likely to be accurate than diagnosis by age.
I'm not a medic, so will probably get rubbished, but there are nowadays quite a few mis-diagnoses, which might be dangerous. Treating T1 as T2 is potentially deadly. the other way around won't usually do any harm.

Ps if your treatment doesn't make much differrence in a few weeks. Do Go back and say so.

Well I've been for my second visit and my Blood/Sugar is down from 26.5 to 16.. :D
My dosage of Gliclazide has been doubled, I have my blood testing equipment to monitor my own levels and my next appointment is in 2 weeks.
I fancy celebrating.. where's that monster bar of chocolate

Hi Jack :)

You are clearly heading in the right direction. What are you now eating and have you changed things and in what way :?:

Glad you have your testing stuff so that you can actually see what your food is doing to your BG levels. 8)

I have totally cut out cakes, sweets, beer and any other sugary stuff, I've also reduced my coffee intake to just 2 cups a day.. mainly because I hate it without sugar (I only have 1 sugar in it anyway). That was all in my first week, I've now been advised that as she can see that the tablets are doing their job I can maybe stop living quite such a 'saintly' lifestyle a little and include a bit of sugar... so it's beer time for me tonight :D.
My problem at the moment is my vision. I have glasses for reading anyway but the last few days it seems to have really deteriorated.. I'm really struggling with it now. Hopefully it will get back to 'normal' soon - or maybe not :?

Hello again Jack. :)

The experience of most of us on this forum does not necessarily accord with that generally dished out. You may well find that you need to get your BG levels down a bit more as it takes a while for your eyes to get back to normal. What are your numbers now :?:

Better, but still higher than you want them to be.

So what was the reading before you ate and what did you eat :?:

I don't know what it was before.. and I had pasta salad, potato salad, 1 hard boiled egg, 2 cherry tomatoes, cucumber and half a dozen slices of green pepper. Not my favourite dinner but there you go..

Hi Jack :)

To really understand what your food is doing to your BG levels you need to do some basics - keep a food diary and against the relevant meals write the before meals reading and the 2 hours afterwards reading. If you also get yourself a Collins gem Carb counter or similar book which gives you the carb amounts for a wide range of foods then you can make wise food choices. All the results will show you patterns which will help you to cut out or cut down or be able to eat different foods and really is a necessity or else you are working completely blind.

Your meal sounds ok but I couldn't have eaten pasta salad or potato salad without shooting my BG levels through the roof and this could possibly explain the high readings you are getting. I no longer eat any of the starchy carbs and get all the carbs I need from fruits and veggies and salad bits; the only way you will know what your body can tolerate is by testing! :)

Incidentally when you eat things like pasta you should also test after 3 hours and 4 hours as the levels will still be rising! Test, test, test! 8)

Ok.. Just tested now, before eating. 8.9 :D
Bit of a rubbish dinner really and I suppose someone will tell me off, I'm having a couple of grilled, 100% beefburgers in rolls. :?
I'll be back in a couple of hours with my 'after dinner' test results.
