my fasting glucose this morning

Diabetes runs in my family so Im always checking my fasting glucose. Usually it's 5.5 - 5.4 but this morning it was 6.8. I panicked and checked again a couple of minutes later and it dropped to 6.2, then 5 mins later it was 6.3. Should I be concerned? It's strange how the reading dropped from 6.8 to 6.2 within a couple of minutes!!

I wouldn't worry too much, Sade. 6.8 is not abnormally high, and a lot depends on what you ate and drank the previous evening. Don't worry about the variations either - it's possible to gt two different readings from the same drop of blood! The meters have a slight inaccuracy variation, and blood sugar can change quite quickly.

In your place I would get Christmas and New Year over - no one can call this time of year 'normal eating' Then arrange to see your doctor or practice nurse to have a proper fasting blood test done at the surgery. Since diabetes runs in your family your GP should understand why you want it done, and much better to catch diabetes early, if you do have it.

Once again, try not to worry. Merry Christmas!

Hi Sade

I wouldn't rely too much on morning fasting tests as they can be influenced by variable overnight glucose dumps by the liver. I would suggest taking measurements 2 hours after a typical meal during the day to see what the readings are.
