Hello friends,

My name is Jeny from the Philippines. I am worried about the diabetes of my father. He had a toe amputation last month, two of his toes. Until now the wounds are not healing and it seems other wounds are starting to appear. His left feet was already amputated 3 years ago and two of the toes on his right was amputated last month.

How many times in a day should the wounds get dressing?

Here are the medicines that he is taking:

sultamicillin
Vitamin B complex
silversulfadiazine
ketoanalogue
lactolus
amlodipine
clonidine
linogliptin

Right now, his two arms and face are swelling. Sometimes he is confused and cannot recognize us. This afternoon he had fever and feeling cold. He does not want to go back to the hospital anymore because it is very stressful there. I hope someone can give us an advice.

Thank you.

Jeny

Jeny, I understand that your father doesn't want to go back to hospital, but he really should so a doctor can check his foot and his other problems.

It's worrying that his face and arms are swelling too. I strongly urge you to get some medical attention for him. Could you go with him to the hospital maybe?

Hi Azure, thanks for your reply. I can go with him in the hospital but I am just not so sure if the medical attention would be enough especially in the public hospital. We have been there from May 29 up to July 20. We are almost 2 months there. He does not want to go through the process once again. I am really discouraged nowadays. He is 65 years old. He got pneumonia when he was there. He was discharge and we thought he is getting better but nowadays he is very weak.

I'm so sorry that he's not well. I don't know anything about the health system in the Phillipines, but is there anywhere else you could go?

How are your father's blood sugar results? If his blood sugar is high that could slow down healing. Unfortunately, no one here can give medical advice. Your father doesn't sound well and I really hope you can get him some help. Could he see a nurse instead?

Or just visit the hospital for a day?

I know a friend who is a nurse. I will let her visit my papa tomorrow. thanks for this forum. I have been skimming the post here but it is just today that I have decided to join.

I'm pleased your friend who is a nurse will see him. I hope he's ok. I hope your friend can check his wounds for you.

I'm glad you like the forum. There's lots of useful information for when your father is feeling better.

Best wishes to you and your father.

Hi Jeny,

Really I think @azure is right that your father needs to be seen to by a professional. Nobody would be qualified to offer any really useful advice here I'm afraid. Your father is on a large range of drugs, only one of which appears to be specific to diabetes (linagliptin).
The only thing that I would sensibly suggest is to ensure your father's blood glucose levels remain in the 'normal' range as much as possible until you can get him seen - so keep his diet low in carbohydrate and possibly higher fat (your father being on Ketoanalogue suggests renal (kidney) issues so you might have been instructed to feed him a lower protein diet?)
The fact that your father is feverish suggests that an infection may have taken hold so the sooner you can get him seen to the better.

The doctor does not mention kidney issues, or maybe my mother does not mention it to us. I think I will bring him back to the hospital tomorrow. This is the most stressful part because our hospital is not that fully equipped. We have to fall in line and wait for hours and hours before a doctor would see us. Sometimes, I think that staying there worsens his condition.

know of any international organization, charities that help diabetics from other parts of the world?

Thank you for the link. I will check it out.
He is complaining of pain in his wounds. He is very weak. :-(

Sorry, Jeny. It must be hard for you to watch him so unwell. I hope your friend can give you an idea of what to do and how he is. If he does have an infection he may need to see a doctor to get antibiotics or have the wounds treated again.

Yes, it is really hard. Sometimes I just condition myself that his days and time are now just few. Other stories of the same situation from neighbors, friends are also not hopeful. I wonder if you know someone who is 65+ years old and have the same problem with my father who were able to overcome this kind of situation. He really does not want to go to the hospital now. We are just treating his wounds and taking medication.

Can anyone recommend a good way to dress a wound. It seems that there is no improvement on his wounds.
Can anyone recommend an ointment? Right now we placed bactrigas on his wounds.

He is still swelling. arms, face and eyes are swollen. He does not want to go back to the hospital.

Good luck Jeny, your father is lucky to have such a caring daughter :) I hope someone can help your father, 65 is still a young age. My best wishes to you both. RRB

ps Jeny, someone must get to the core of why your father is suffering like this and he does need medical assistance.

Bactigas is a good dressing for this type of wound. The best thing to do would be to have a nurse visit the house to dress his wound regularly, as they can check it and use the right dressings. But I know your father may not want professional help and I am not sure what services there are where you live.

Is there a doctor he can go and see, that is not at the hospital? How does your father get medication prescribed?

HI Catlady,

The prescription was from the hospital and we just continue using it. He was hospitalized for 2 months. Now his face and eyes were swelling. I have read in the internet that it maybe bec of Kidney damage.
