Well iv just had my first hypo at 2.9bs, i feel like rubbish and got a bit scared just a good job my partner is calm, i knew i wasnt right, my head is throbbing, not in a painful way but as though the room is beating and iv been dropping off to sleep and feeling drunk :( Well at least it happened at home and not at work or out, iv had a small amount of lucazade and 2 digestives, i hope this is right?

Hope your ok now anyway and the buscuits and drink help you back to normal  , was only wondering today can T2 get hypos and hypers, lowest ever test i had today was 4.1 about four and a half hours after food. Just wondering cause i spent along time before i came T2 in the hyper ranges and thankfully nothing ever happened me

Yeah ill be ok i feel a bit drunk still but iv come back into the normal range however im just about to take my tablets so i hope that this doesnt set it off again :(

That must have been scary for you and something I have been wondering about. I suppose now you know what is going to happen you can spot the symptoms?

I must admit that having two siblings with diabetes I'm not worried about hypos - it's the hypers that get me. Whilst my brother can inject to lower his level, all I can do is wait for it to go - there doesn't seem to be a great deal to do when you're taking oral medication.

As you say, at least you know the signs now and what to do. Make sure that friends, relatives and a couple of good work colleagues also know the signs - and importantly, listen to them when they tell you they think you might be hypo. I've had to tell a work colleague before now that he's hypo because he hadn't noticed the signs.

Thank you i have told everyone lol

Iv just had another one, im dropping a gliclazide tomorrow as the nurse told me 2 if i have another one which i just have, but the worrying thing is i didnt even feel it coming :?

Its all fun and games lol

I've only been on 80mg of Gliclazide for the last week, so it's early days yet - but the doc warned me to watch my low levels, so I'm prepared. That said as my lowest level is still 12, I don't think I need to worry yet.

But you're right - never a dull moment on this rollercoaster ride at the moment!

Was there any change in your diet/lifestyle that preempted the hypo BB?

I mean, I have more of an issue with high readings than low. I'm just wondering if this could change suddenly?

What have your figures been like prior to the hypo?

My pre hypo figures are between 6 and 7 so nothing out of the norm, with regards to change, i have been taking gliclazide for about 1 and a half weeks and was told to be careful to keep my carbs up, she advised between 40 and 60g of carbs per meal or this would happen, tonight is a bit of an odd one as i had chips for tea which is really carby so not sure and it took two lots of lucazade and checking for it to come back up and i didnt feel it coming so a bit confused, im going to drop my morning dose and just take my metformin as the nurse said as i dont want to be having these everyday, from what i can tell gliclazide is agressive on lowering sugars however since i began them they have come down from 9-14bs to between 5 - 9bs so they are good but they come with a price xx

I'm med free right now, but I'm wondering how long that will last?

What islet cells I do have left are likely to slowly deteriorate over the next few years so I'll have to take meds then.

Glica seems aggressive.

Can anyone remind us how it works? Unless I'm mistaken is this one no the one they developed from lizard saliva?

Does it compel the pancreas to work harder or does it work on the resistant receptors - or both?

After taken metformin for 6 months it was time to change medication because of the side effects so was put onto glicklazide (appologise for the spelling) i had daily hypos very scarey ones when my count dropped to 1.2 at one stage got a taste for sugary drinks again 2 or 3 times a day  i was then put onto sitagliptin and touch wood i have had no more problems but if you are still having hypos a trip to the doc/nurse is in order.

Byetta is derived from lizard spit (Gila Lizard).

Gliclazide forces the pancreas to produce more insulin.

That's why there is so much confusion. If you are T2 and very insulin resistant, Gliclazide will likely have the side effect of making you put on weight.

If you are T2 and NOT insulin resistant, you run the risk of Hypos when on Gliclazide.

This is my big gripe with the NHS's treatment of T" Diabetics. They don't seem to try to find out if you are:

A) Insulin Resistant (ie - producing insulin, but not using it), or;
B) NOT producing enough insulin (ie - not resistant to insulin, but not producing enough insulin to cover the food you eat).

Why don't they test for either of these? As far as I am concerned, it should be the FIRST thing they do before deciding what treatment route to take.

That seems VERY pessimistic to me.........it's what you make it. You are not guaranteed to get worse over time. There are many long term Diabetic's still not taking any or very little Med's. With good control the outlook is sunny !

Glica seems aggressive.
I have to disagree, it does a good job for many. I came off it completely once good control was achieved so you don't have to stay on it forever.

Glyclazide is a Sulphonylurea. Here is a link to some information about the drug posted previously in the Diabetes Medication and Drugs section. If you want more technical information then check out the EMEA website for the full charecteristics of the drug and how it works.

The one derived from 'Lizard Spit', the Gila Monster portrayed in my Avatar, is Byetta.
