My first takeaway in 4 months…

Last night I just really needed something different. From an Indian restaurant I ordered paneer tikka (no sauce), broccoli (very minimal sauce) and cauliflower (it had been deep fried in something and had lots of chilli / salt). No rice no bread no lentils.
Before eating my level was 6.
2hours later 9.5, another 2 hours later still 7.7.
I’m guessing the meal was just laced with sugar? I have no problem with keeping my spikes low with home cooking but do want to eat out more. I know I’m only prediabetic but I’m pretty young, and I’ve found being strict is what works for me. I’m not stressed out by the above, just a bit surprised.

Do you have any luck at restaurants / takeaway asking for no sugar etc? Do you feel confident to ask that at all?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions :)

Hi

I'd guess that if there was a lot of sugar, you'd maybe have tasted it. It's probably more likely that there were substantial carbs in, say, flour/spice coatings for the cauliflower or paneer. Did you have anything to drink at the same time?

I tend to go for a meat thali anywhere I'm not familiar with - there may be carbs added to the meat but it does reduce the amount. Most places usually do veg thali as well.

Ah yes, a flour coating would make sense. I’m a vegetarian and so it does limit things, was just so pleased I made good choices and was then rewarded with a ‘what now!?’ :)

Hi
it wasn’t a huge spike and as you say it’s only occasionally and being aware is a good thing so don’t be too hard on yourself and as long as you enjoyed it. I hanker for butter chicken and I’ve found a guy on YouTube that does great Indian keto or low carb alternatives. His channel is called headbangers kitchen he does paneer and vegetable curries too.

Thanks. Yeah I cook a lot of Indian food at home - but I live alone and sometimes I just reallllly want someone else to cook for me :) I enjoyed it but not enough that I’d do it again with that same meal.

I think those bloods are fine for an occasional meal out. Don't worry about it, unless you're planning to eat there regularly!

(Side note: I also have to be strict to keep myself on track. As a 'binge' for me could end up lasting 4 months and add 5 stone to my weight )
