My gp surgery

That must have been very difficult for you @ally1 with your actual GP being in the meeting. Well done indeed for doing this. :)

It sounds like your GP has had his hands slapped by the head GP.

It makes good sense to wait until the results of the MRI and the tests are ready so you have some evidence to work on. Good luck for those, and do keep us updated. You have done so well getting this far. My hat goes off to you.

Golly Alli.....you have done well......good for you for sticking to your guns the way you have......you should be feeling proud of yourself.
Shame you can't move across to the head GP, but at least the gp you see should be more supportive now he's been put on notice to pay more attention to what you say.......go girl.......Good luck with the tests.......you are an inspiration to many......xxxx

@ally1 - I agree with the others that it's a pity you can't move across to your preferred GP, but on the upside, it sounds like you had the most excellent meeting, with the opportunity to put your case to the Big Cheese in person. To do that with the offending GP in the room takes guts, but it does mean everyone in the loop has heard the same words on the same day, so "She didn't say that to me", or, "That's not at all how that meeting went" can never be said for today.

Additionally, you are now known to the Big Cheese - she has a duty to care for all the patients on the surgery's list and will want to protect her own as well as the surgery's professional reputation. She will also know that if you feel the need to raise matters again, either she will hear about them immediately, or they will go over her head, to the powers that be.

Boy, Ally, you've had such a struggle these last few years, and despite some very cruel hands in these cards of life, you have come a long, long, long way. It is incredibly sad that you have had to fight so hard to geth this far, but you did it and you're making progress.

I hope you can take great pride from today.

I have looked into another surgery. The one I would like to join, am not in their catchment area.
The only one I can register with, they can't seem to keep their gp, s
In my area if people are already registered with a GP practice then no other practices will take them. They only take new patients who move to the area

An update.
I had a meeting with the head gp at my surgery this morning.
The meeting included my gp.
Had a good chat, though am unable to change to the Head gp which I would have liked. I was offered another gp, I declined that one because I can't stand him, too pompous.
We spoke about the problems I feel I have with the gp I have.
So we came to the decision to stay with my named gp and see how things go.
We also went through the appt that I had with the neurologist. As I have the nerve conductive studies on 13th then MRI on the 14th. I have got an appt to see my gp a week after those because both gps today say I need to see neurologist before the recommended February's appt with neurologist. So gp will contact hospital before doing anything about my eye sight/squint because the MRI may show some light on the problem with sight.
Fair enough, as I feel now I am bring listened too
Glad you have finally got somewhere with the doctor I can't understand though why you are not able to see the head of practice GP if you want to. My husband and I have a dedicated doctor because we are over 70 and ours just happens to be the head of practice and she is very popular we can see any of the other doctors if we want to just as any other patients can see her if they want to there is no restrictions on what doctors patients can see

The head gp is only part time and said she was unable to take anyone else

You are absolutely right. Well done.

That is not very satisfactory the head of practise being only part time when she should be available to all the patients who want to see her not just see a certain ones and no others. Does that mean if you or any other patient really wants to see her you are told no you can't because you are not on her list of patients

I think asserting any GP (or anyone/things else) is omnipresent and available at any time is unrealistic. A part-time senior partner isn't ideal, but it could be due to small children, other family matters, training (in another medical, perhaps) or in the case in my surgery a couple of years ago, the senior partner was teaching at the local medical school. He actually eventually gave up his GP role, to full-time lecture and train GPs.

That a person isn't present doesn't mean they're disinterested.

Each GP has a list of patients. They can't keep adding to that list ad infinitum or their waiting times would be far too long. Once their list is full, it is full.

I do not know if it works at other practices but the doctors at our practice each have a special interest illness ie diabetes, woman's problems, arthritis and joints and chest problems so some people could see different doctors for their various problem if they want to but we are not bound by that because some people just prefer to see the same doctor every time

Yes, I agree. At my surgery we can see any doctor we choose, but we can only have one registered doctor who has overall responsibility for our care. Also, if we have an emergency and need to see one that day, we ring up on the day, and we are given whichever doctor has a vacancy that day. It could be any of them. If we want to see a particular doctor we have to book in advance and hope against hope that doctor has some appointments available. If that doctor has a busy list and/or is part time, it makes life very difficult.

Sometimes-they haven’t got an interest in specialities. I know this from my last Practice..

They had a list of illnesses that had to have a GP responsible. It was a case of dishing out that responsibility to any GP. The GP for diabetes just got landed with that role... it wasn’t his interest or his speciality. He hadn’t done any extra training in it.

Sometimes you are better off seeing the diabetic nurse... at my current practice one nurse is a partner and two nurses are double Degrees’s and they have specialised in diabetes.

In most practices the named GP for a patient can be changed if a request is out in, in writing. I have done this.

My old Practice did it as well. They saw a named GP as the one that was responsible for signing a death certificate..... no more than that. They don’t like to have patients change as there imbalance of patients for certain GPs workloads can occur... ie no-one wanting to see a new GP....

You do not have to change Practice but you can write a simple request to change and you do not have to give a reason in your local group of GPs.

I was offered a different gp, but refused because one, I can't stand him, second he said I never had a mental illness after being diagnosed with bipolar from a psych.
