I love tinned fish and today I thought I'd try john west mackerel in Mexican style sauce. It wasn't until I looked on the back of the can (after I'd eaten it) that it had 13.1g carbs which I'm not too concerned about but it said 'of which sugars, 10.8'!!) - I wasn't expecting that and unfortunately I didn't test 2HPM but I'm guessing it probably wasn't a good thing to have. It was really nice and I'm going to have to buy it again and this time test to see if it's a No No.

Is it because they are in the sauces that make it high?

It is the sauce, the mackerel will have zero carbs.

Mackerel is delicious and extremely good for you, in Aldi they do vacuum packed mackerel with different seasonings, they are really cheap at around £1.40 for 2-3 fillets :)

Yip, they like to lace those sauces with sugar.... and why? what's wrong with a tomato sauce without sugar...... tend to go with those just in oil... and then again there are oils and "oils"....
it's not easy.

You can always buy plain and add your own spicy sauce without carbs. Not sure if you have chaloola or not but it's great. Even some dry spicy spices with olive oil.

We have to be very careful with tinned foods that contain sauces, and that includes reduced sugar stuff.
I'm not a mackerel fan. I stick to tinned salmon.

Lesson learnt for you @carina62 - check the labels before you buy. ;)

Good idea, buy plain and drizzle with a little olive oil and sprinkle some chilli flakes and ground pepper.

The tinned fish labels cannot be read without a magnifying glass!
I avoid tinned fish in sauces because I'm always suspecting the sauce is hiding something and that ruins my enjoyment of them. I get them in oil and drain the oil off. I also get the Aldi vac pack ones .... very tasty.

I love mackerel and sardines morrisons do lovely fresh ones, ask them to fillet them, bake them in a chilli oil lovely.
