Hi folks, i've been to see the dietician at the diabetic clininc, and, you've guessed it i've got to eat "LOTS" of rice, pasta, bread (brown only though), eight egg sized potatoes, tons of veg and fruit, any cordials or soft drinks with not a lot of sugar but includes "VIMTO" (wow, go for it) and alcohol (bonus material eh !!) :D . I've got to start exercising, start with light running she said even though i limped in with my ongoing feet problems. :?

I tell you what this diabetes thing aint half good, eat and drink what i want it seems and there was i foolishly thinking to myself i'd have to watch the carbs for the rest of my life and behave, but no it's, go on my son, tuck in and enjoy.

So there we go, i'm sure my last HBA1c (6.3) won't change one iota eating all what i'm allowed to eat above when i next have my bloods done. Got the chicken madras and crate of stella ready for tonight because it'll do me so good

Oh dear - she wasn't such a silent assassin - she's trying to poison you

Get a canary for your egg-size potatoes :) Take the rest of the diet advice with a pinch of salt ....

How do we progress the war on dietitians :?:

I was chatting to our Pastor's wife today at an Indian funeral - she is trained as a professional dietitian. They all know that carbs are good for us. The best I've had is, "it works for you - but we're all different (so everyone else should keep up with the carbs.)"

I would say "Try it, while keeping a food diary and show them", but I'm not so reckless

I saw the dietician the other day who had no other recommendations re what I was doing but said I could be eating more carbs ie bigger portion cereals, extra slice bread in the morning etc.
Have stopped pretending now and just said no, I dont intend to.
Am sticking to bout quarter plate at tea time (not full, just section of the plate) and wont be eating the 40% recommendation. I know they think my diet is unsustainable (given newness of diagnosis) and quality of life is poor (well of course it is, there are so many things now I cant or wont have, and no longer have freedom of eating what I want when I want).

Interestingly enough was told to drink full sugar drinks with my alcohol (spirits) to avoid hypos later on. Nearly choked -why would I drink 3 or 4 times the amount of soft drinks I would use to treat a hypo as a matter of course. Said I would just stick to upping carbs a bit before bed time - surely less evil than equivalent of drinking 3 cans of coke.

Mon dieu!

Do you really have a whole can of fizzy with your short? I think she might had in mind that you might have a large dash of coke/lemmonade in common with most people...

The problem with acholo is that while the liver is dealing with it, it can't store or maintain the store of glucose hence why your sugar raises and yo can suffer a hypo later nothing coming off the liver into the system until all acholo has been processed... which in the adverage person the liver takes about a hour per unit of achilo do to...

Another little bit of info, only 40% of the carbs you eat goes straight to your blood to be used 60% of the carbs gos to liver or fat store to be stored.... You can see how a low carb diet can burn fat... As if you are really low carbing the body will take it's energy from the fat store already laied down in the body...

Do you think I should follow her advice? Im confused now?

If I drink 4 spirits say, then it would be conceivable that I would be on to my 2nd can of coke (in virtual terms, so to speak given it is usually a dash ) to mix with it. As 100mls is what is recommended for a hypo, drinking more than 300ml can of coke would give me the 3/4 x more coke figure I mentioned. Am also new to diagnosis and probably not yet as settled as some. Or maybe I am as settled as Im going to be - I just dont know.

Also, mixers are to dilute drinks which in the 'good old days' I would quite happily polish of much more than 4 over the course of a night (starting with a pub and ending with a club) so they need to last longer. Have not ventured a drink yet but am quite concerned now re what to do when I do.

Havent yet had a night time hypo and will probably sit up all night the first time I put drink near me. If liver takes 4 hours to metabolise alcohol in four units does this mean that four hours after I stop drinking I am at less risk of hypos?

Am still eating some carbs during day due to insulin 'needs' (pre mix) so prob not as low carb as some, just lower carb than what I used to be.

Thanks

I've always found that if was going to have a hypo then I would more likely get it the next day late morning when I was least expecting it.... But the dificulty in advising how to handle a drinking seesion is hard, because every-one seems to react differently i.e some process the acohol quicker other slower the same as with insulin...

But I know that it sounds like you could be taking more carbs than you might for a hypo, but you do need to remember acholo reduces BG's not by it own properites but because it stops the liver from storing glucose or releasing it into the blood... This make more sense if you look at the type of insulin you're taking... A long actin/back ground insulin really deals with just what coming off the liver and quick acting insulin is what you're injecting to combat the carbs in food/meal content...

So if the acholo stops the liver from functioning for several hours the background insulin doesn't wait for the liver to return to normal it will convert any glucose in the blood... So you need to ensure that the blood has enough carbs going to it...

I would give her idea ago as by what she is saying you are unlikely to go hypo, you might run a little high for a while but you would get a better idea where to make ajustments... That the problem with insulin it is a case of trial and error at times... So there will be times when your BG's will be out of kilter and run a little high... But it's difficult at times to determin which suggestion will work best for you...

But if you are just having one or two pub measure then the effect really wouldn't be that big and I myself wouldn't make much changes only enure that I monitored before going to bed and through the next morning as well... You will hopefully know how much you might drop over a normal night acholo can increase this drop and if you have a nightime hypo the dangers are that you haven't got your back up store in your liver to bring you out... It's safer to run high before going to bed and sort in the morning in my opinion that is...

I followed my "diabetic diet" for a day and showed the results to my GP, my BG was banging up and down between below 4 and over 8 (I'm suprised it wasn't further out of range) made quite a blip in my graphs compared to my usual (relatively) low carb numbers

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME unless you have a deathwish

Made me realise why they try to stop you testing

She's an Equal Opportunites Dietician, she wants you to have an A1c over 9 like most other diabetics (I can't remember what is the actual average in the UK). Why should you be special???

A glass of fizzy water with a slice of lemon floating in it is a good social drink and you can get the feeling of wellbeing from just being in company of friends. then Dance away the evening and the carbs. Change the water for lemonade if you use up a lot of "fuel"
Have Fun!!
