My old life is over. :(

Thank you all for the encouragement and great food ideas. I do agree - I feel lucky to have found this forum as I scrolled through tons and tons of posts that seemed to offer endless support. And then of course I read the threads on retinopathy - and my concerns about food seem so so small in comparison.

I have bought a gluco meter and test strips (I live in Singapore where we don't get great healthcare support and so will be paying for most of my meds (if not all!) out of pocket) and have been regularly testing myself the past weeks. Today, my BG level before breakfast was the lowest ever at 4.8! My levels are measuring between 6-10 regularly, so 4.8 is really a landmark. I have been REALLY good with my food - very small portions, eating several meals, trying to eat less carbs - and the results seem to be showing. I started at a BG level of 21 when diagnosed and was used to eating whatever I want and chugging down at least 2 cans of soft drinks a day...

I also went online to buy pycnogenol after reading on one of the threads that it might be good and have stocked up on supplements specifically for diabetics by GNC. Bit of an overkill I guess, but given that I can't start really exercising until my kidney infection completely clears up, this is my way of putting my best foot forward!

Again, thank you everyone and I am going to try and make the best of this and hope that by being creative around ingredients and food, I can still eat well. Mileana - having one day off occasionally to indulge in *some* carbs sounds like a great idea and I am going to allow myself that!

ShyGirl, I have a couple of veggie friends and food choices sometimes really aren't easy! All the best to you too and I hope you discover lots of delicious options.

hi Bubble

It's not the easiest thing to accept... especially when first diagnosed. I was diagnosed when I was 25, and I'm now almost 39. If I was honest I'd say I've had my ups and downs the entire way and the downs is where I really wish I didn't have diabetes as it a big thorn in the butt. Don't worry about how you're feeling as it is normal to feel a mix of emotions. My advice for you as a newby is to always be alert about how your body is working... be assertive with your docs when you need to be (goodness I wish I was more assertive myself)... and always keep up an overall positive attitude no matter what... it's a journey. Thankfully you have this forum... which is something I didn't have myself when first diagnosed. So you have a wealth of information on here from peeps in the know... or at least with some sort of clue and understanding to what you're experiencing. Chin up :D
