with the diabetic blood sugar count machine, do you have to pay for the testing thingys you put in the machine or can you get them from your gp?

Hi there,

As a type 2 you will generally have to pay as most GPs won't prescribe. You can ask and might be lucky if you explain to your doc that this is important for your operation (other thread).
If not there are meters with cheaper strips and I'm sure someone will dig out the links for you.

Hi @John73 and welcome to the forum. Usually Type 2 diabetics only get testing strips on prescription if they are on insulin, due to NHS budget constraints. You could try asking though.
Most of us T2s have to buy our strips ourselves. The cheapest are the SD Codefree, or the TEE2 which I use. The strips for the TEE2 are £7.50 for 50, and you don't pay VAT if you are diabetic.
You can get the TEE2 meter and 10 strips free. Use the search box at top right, or google TEE2 to get the website.

Hi I ordered the TEE2 and a box of strips. As there's no script charge in Wales, I will ask my GP re the Pura strips but if not at nineteen quid for 50 on Amazon I can't afford to pay that.

My GP may prescribe, but I seriously don't want to take the mickey, its bad enough with the coloplast bags and stuff that I order for my stoma, I order and the surgery just write the script, but my track record has proven I only order what I need. So I really don't want to take advantage.
