I've just followed a link to your website, from
www.diabetes.co.uk
I remember your name from a Southall study I was involved in over 15 years ago, where various tests relating to heart & diabetes were done, particularly comparing Asian & indigenous populations. We did a food diary for you, & you supplied an electronic scale with automatic tare that worked so fast that we could pour sugar onto it steadily with continual reset to zero!
I've been T2 diabetic for about 10 years, & am 71 next month
For the first 8 years I followed the NHS/DUK diet guidelines, keeping active & basing my diet on low/medium GI carbs. Two years ago I was becoming crippled with leg muscle pains that were ending my active life. At that point, I found the
www.diabetes.co.uk forum, & found that many diabetics had found that a drastic reduction in carb consumption, contrary to the medical advice, gave great benefits.
Within 3 months I was active again, playing tennis at club standard & my health in no way impaired by diabetes. I've lost 7 Kg. (BMI 25)
Now my HbA1c is 5.9, down from 6.7 two years ago.
My active approach to diabetes control leads me to believe that NHS diabetes care is seriously flawed, particularly with regard to diet. There seems to be an accepted line - received wisdom - that is used by health professionals that a diet based on complex carbs is beneficial. I have found the contrary, & when the complications set in, a low carb diet reversed the complications.
I attended the recent DUK conference on "Self Management" & an "X-PERT Course" at Hounslow.
I suspect that a major weakness of diabetes care is that the health professionals tend not to be diabetic, & do not realise how much there is for them to learn from those of us who are coping with the disease. I'm a retired professional scientist.
I look forward to hearing from you, & hope I can be helpful.
