Just been for a meal at Nandos. My blood sugars were a little high at 8.6 (had a couple too many dextrose tablets to cover a walk this morning). I had the butterfly chicken, and a Mediterranean salad. I donated all but one of the cherry tomatoes to my wife. The nandos website claims there is very little carbohydrate in this, but I have tested an hour later and my blood sugars read 18! Eek! Has anyone else had a problem like this? I have been low carving since the beginning of the week and prior to this my highest level has been 8.6.

What did you have to drink? Carbs in meal about 8, shouldn't be a problem. Could they have served you a full fat coke rather than diet coke? Been caught out like that before:( xx

I'm going out so not much time but a couple of things come to mind. Med salad as already said is supposedly 8.2 carbs. What was your BG pre breakfast, what did you eat for breakfast, did you check it before you went for a walk? If not, were the glucose sweets really necessary? I don't think you need them unless you're hypo. Gotta go now :)

My blood sugars were 2.8 this morning. I had two fried eggs, two rashers of bacon and half a small green bell pepper for breakfast, along with 3 dextrose tablets slightly before for the hypo. I walked two miles with a sizeable hill, and had two more dextrose tablets on route. I did not want to risk another hypo, as I was going to meet two new piano pupils and did not want to pass out in their home! After I was done teaching, I walked another mile, and found that my bg level was 10.0. I gave myself one unit of lispro to compensate, and walked round some shops for half an hour. When I got to nandos my blood sugars were 8.6. I served my own diet coke, and always triple check it's not regular.

I would also have needed to bolus for the protein in the chicken, although probably would do that at the end of the meal.

Thanks for that point, it was quite a large portion of chicken I had. I have also reduced my Lantus from 18 to 14, due to night time hypos (lowest 1.8). Hopefully I can show my glucose and food diary at my diabetic clinic on Monday and they can tell me how to iron out the insulin/food creases.

Nandos also use quite a lot of sweet sauces on their chickens ?

Although you may think it's relatively a carb free meal you'd still need to bolus for the protein, you'll more than likely find that you have to split-dose for meals when you low-carb.

Did you take any fast acting for the Nandos? Like Robert has said, the Chinese Restaurant Effect is the cause for your increase in BGs. Nandos is low carb, I eat there fairly often. I need around 6 units of fast acting for their meals - the same as my low carb meals at home.

Thats interesting, 6 units of insulin for a low carb meal. Is it the case that as well as the fat/prorein eaten for a period of times would cause a greater sensitivity to any carbs eaten.

I took three units of fast acting to go with the meal. How much Basal do you take? I am having a lot of hypos, and am gradually reducing my Lantus to try and combat this. Currently taking 14 units around 7.30 each evening. Might speak to my DSN at my appointment about splitting the dose into a twice daily routine.
