I need some advice on how to low carb properly.

I have attempted many a time to go low carb when I am trying to take better care of myself but I only know the basics and I never stick very long which is silly since my numbers show that it's working for me, I just think I have a terrible relationship with food.

I just need a little help on understanding how it works, how to make it work better and how to do it properly.

I need to get under control, I am stuck in an unhealthy rut and need to get a grip.

thanks :)

Hi Lezzles

I am in a bit of similar situation. I have tried but never managed to keep low carbing for more than a few days as my cravings for carbs take over and also because i have more than a terrible relationship with food (which now i am hoping to start getting help for).

I too know the in's and out's of low carbing thanks to the fab people on here....and when i do more than 3 days i can see my numbers slowly coming down.

i am sometimes bit jealous i have to admit when i see on here how much BG improve quickly for some people but the reality is that i do not give low carbing time enough to start working.

so...hopefully we both can find a way to get unstuck and get a grip :)

take care
claudette

Hi you 2 :)

There are a couple of things that I have found REALLY useful in my low carb journey.

Sugar free jelly and low carb almond muffins.

hope this helps!

Hi tree

i do have sugar free jelly....but i am going off it a bit now....

i also have done a low carb chocolate cake which is yummy

i have bought some low carb stuff like low carb pasta and shirataki noodles and low carb tortillas...so the intention is there, i just need to stop sabotaging myself by going shopping for alot of cr*p

Suga free jello with double cream or clotted cream, yum! If you want to low carb I find it much easier to forget about pasta, noodles etc, don't bother with the low carb version as they only make you want the real ones. The hard trick is to get over the 1 to 2 week mark, you will feel a little **** but after this barrier you will feel so much better..

Maybe you're trying to go from one extreme to another. If you go from High Carb to low carb, that's a big demand. Those who do it undoubtedly benefit. If you find it hard, perhaps try the sort of half way house I eat, starting at half the carbs reccommended for a non-diabetic- that's 150 for a man, 125 for a woman. leave out the obvious nasties like sugars, white bread and other starchy carbs. Then test and see how you get on with that level. Give it a chance to work and for your BGs to settle. If you're ok, then it's a diet you can stick with that isn't too hard. If you're levels are still too high, you have a choice. Lower the carbs until you find a level that's ok, or accept the medication route.

Thanks for the advice so far.
Tree-Peony.....Do you make the Almond muffins yourself?

Claudette, if you ever need some back up just shout, it's a slight comfort that im not the only one that struggles :)

I agree with this. While I do make cauliflower mash, and I love it, I wouldn't buy other 'alternatives' simply because they could make me yearn for the real thing. I am no longer even eating bread. I found I had to make a 'new normal' and that didn't include any of the things I can't have, or alternatives.

Claudette, the problem is, when you get a carb craving you are giving in to it. You need to brace yourself for a short while of tough days, and brave it out. Hand on heart, I never ever crave carbs now, I don't even think about them, this is my new normal. Give your self a date where you are not going to have any more carbs, or vastly reduced amounts, then come and tell us. We will support you through the carb cravings, until you come out the other side.

Hugs - Jo x

I do, yes, and the recipe is here

they're very quick and easy to make :) I keep them in a snap and store and they last several days.

You can make muffins last several days :?: Bl**dy he** mine are almost gone the minute I get them out the oven  Hence why I don't make them very often.

LOL yes I ration myself to one large or 2 small a day! (mostly!!)

Thanks to you and all this talk of muffins, I have a batch of almond and coconut muffins baking as I type. I did mean to add some cocoa powder as I found some Green and Blacks in Sainsbury's, but I forgot. Oh well, lashings of double cream should make up for forgetting the chocolate.

Now comes the hard part, limiting them when they are done and cool. Why do I just know I will fail. :shh:

lol sorry!!! but don't you find that Splenda and chocolate taste horrid together? I got some erythitol (sp???) but am not keen on the "cold" taste

Really? I have not baked anything with cocoa/chocolate and Splenda together, so that's a great tip before I do. I am sure we can find a solution, we usually do. You have to be extremely resourceful to be diabetic don't you?

I think it was Whitby Jet who mentioned it, and it must be one of those individual things cos OH scoffed them down while I was pulling a "OMG I've been poisoned" face!

   I will fiddle around when I make the cocoa/chocolate muffins and let you know what I find. I love all this experimenting, for years it was just follow a recipe and voila, now it's not so simple, it's fun.

Well, 3 muffins and 50ml of double cream later, I have gone and done it again. Luckily the carb content for the lot is only around 5g of carbs as I divide the mixture that would make an eight slice cake into 12 muffins. Only one gram of carbs in the cream, and I am well within my carb allowance today at 18g [subtracting the fresh fruit and veg fiber]. So although I feel rather sick and very full, they were worth it.

My daughters melted chocolate and had that on top, I was very well behaved and didn't have any at all.

hmmmm the melted chocolate gives me an idea ;)

It was green and blacks, but as I had so much cream I decided against. Tell, tell, tell, what idea have you had? I am going grocery shopping tomorrow instead of Friday as schools all break up tomorrow and it will be manic in Sainsbury's on Friday. So if you whisper in my ear what you're thinking, and I like it as well, if I am short on ingredients I can get them tomorrow.
