Hi, I am new to the forum, please bear with me. I am a type 2 on metformin (3 x 850mg) and sytaglyptin. I have just finished the Knowledge of London to become a black cab driver but they are refusing to issue me with a licence at the moment as my last Hb1ac reading on February 4th was 102. I know this is high. I am due for another blood test on 27th March. I am currently attending a gym every day but need help with my diet. Any advice would be greatly received.

Hi, welcome.
Diets that work for one may not be suitable for another so tell us about what you eat at present and hopefully we can work out a WoE that will suit.

Welcome to the forum and best of luck with your new career!

I'm really no expert but have you tried low carbing? Replacing white bread and white rice with wholemeal and brown? Give up sugars as much as you can, even sweeteners. Choose whole fruit rather than juice.

Thanks for replying.... I do have a sweet tooth but I am at the moment resisting temptation. Generally I have either shredded wheat or weetabix (small sprinkle of sugar with semi skimmed milk) for breakfast with a mug of tea. Some fruit during the day. Maybe a roll and diet coke for lunch. Then an evening meal comprising lean meat, potatoes and veg with water. This is what I am trying to do at the moment. Like I said, I am at the gym most mornings for about an hour cycling, walking and swimming...then into steam room. Any advice welcome. :inpain:

Ouch ! You can always change after to something different but l suggest a fast change. And go low carb high fat
Cut out sugar if you must get a sweetner also cut out cerial have scrambled egg +/- bacon
Cut out all bread and rolls and potatoes.
Have a long read of the low carb forum unless there is a reason you cannot go low carb high fat.
Have cream instead of skimmed milk in your drinks and as no cerial it is immaterial on that
Butter not low fat spread
cauli and broccoli and dark veg are fine but carrots and peas are higher carb = sugar
fruit small apple every so often but avoid fruit from overseas usually higher sugar in melons and grapes and bananas.

lot of other advice going to fly your way but you dont have much time to improve so if no medical reason then you need to decide how strict you want to be with yourself

For me your carb intake is to high, if I ate those sorts of levels my BS would be really high. Swop the cereal for breakfast for baon, eggs or some Greek Yoghurt with seeds and berries. If your a taxi driver lunch will be tougher as food on the go tends to be in the form of something in bread - but you could swap a white rolls for lower carb multi grain (eg Burgen Soya & Linseed or Livlife bread). If you're eating fruit try to have it with your meal, rather than as a seperate snack, and go for berries or cold climate fruits rather than the tropical sorts. Finally Get Yourself A Meter, if you GP won't give you one I recommend the SD Codefree availible on Amazon and Ebay, mainly because the strips are much cheaper than other ones. Test before you eat and 2 hrs after, anything that raises your BG by 2mmol after eating isn't good and should be avoided. Good Luck

Hi David and welcome to the forum.

You do not say if you are testing your blood sugars. You have to test to see which foods are causing your blood sugars to rise or you will go on eating those things. If your Dr. will not supply one then here is a link to the cheapest one and the strips do not cost a fortune.

There is some advice for newly diagnosed that will help you choose the right foods.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.26870/

You will get advice from people but what you have to do is to find an eating plan that works for you and one that you can stick to.

Hi im having trouble also ive been type 2 for 8 years and on that many tabs im rattling the doctor tells me nothing, i only found out today if you are diabetic you get your medications free and ive been paying for 8 years no one told me , i some times feel rotten sick and hot ,i have never smoked or drank in my life and ive not had sugar in my tea for 40 years yet still im like this, im sick of it sorry to moan but you cant live on lettuce alone you have to have some bread and potatoes to fill you dont you ? it scares me because the tablets might make you go in to a coma if your sugars drop to low , i eat lots of fruit and veg so what else are you supposed to eat , help needed here to please.

Sorry back just seen this. Not if you want to be healthy, Tiggy only time l eat lettuce if they dump it on my plate when we go out. As advice for posters do a separate post listing the food you eat, type of meds and any health problems then someone/s will be able to advise from there :)

Congrats on doing the Knowledge, I reckon that's pretty **** good.!

Your diet would be way too high in carb for me, carb converts to sugar in the blood and would put my BG's into orbit if I had that much. I do low carb but I simply can't eat high fat, it creates the most awful reflux for me although I do have a wee bit of cream in my morning coffee simply because it's gorgeous! I know that many on here do Low Carb, High Fat though with a lot of success.

So...I would get rid of the cereal and the sugar on it, you don't need any added sugar at all. I have eggs or blueberries with full fat yoghurt (low fat almost anything has a lot of added sugar) with LSA on it. Most fruit is stuffed with sugar so spare that if you can. Lunch might be difficult but perhaps you could take salad and cold meat in an insulated container of some kind to keep it safe and bacteria free, or some of what you had the night before for tea. Don't have bread with it. Evening meal is okay but cut out the potatoes especially if they are old ones which contain more starch.

Lastly read, read and then read some more. There is a truckload of advice on here no matter which way you choose to go. Like someone else said we are all different and what works for me might not work for you. Test a lot at first, find out what spikes you and what you can safely eat.

Good Luck! :D
