Need ideas for exercise I can do without much time

Hi Folks,

I'm a type 2 trying to get into shape and get my sugars on track. Previously, I was doing an hour-long session at the gym 3 times a week (5 min warm up and cool down with 30 mins running and 20 mins light weights/sit ups etc). I was also taking one ballet class a week. However, since my son has started school, the time I'm out of the house for has extended a fair bit -- meaning that I'm not getting dinner on the table until 6.45, which makes for a very late trip to the gym some 2 hours later...and at that point it's always horrendously crowded.

I'm going to add one more dance class and I've started parking my car a 10 minute walk away from the office, but I could really use some ideas for stuff to do at home -- especially now that the nights are drawing in. Are there any good resources out there to get me started if I got some dumbbells and a yoga mat for example? The resistance training is actually my least favourite form of exercise to be honest so it'd be good if it was something fun as well....thank you for any help you're able to offer :)

Consider Press ups. They don't take long and can be done anywhere. If I haven't be able to do any weight training or cycling during the day , a couple hundred press ups in the evening really keep the blood sugar down :-)

A kettle bell is fun and good for both toning and calorie burning. There are videos to guide you, plus they don't take up much room.

Hello

Your best bet would be HIIT/circuit training. Basically you set up a circuit of different stations .... this covers both resistance training and cardio as it's a fairly fast pace so your heart rate is kept relatively high. Here's an example:

5 Min Warmup: Brisk stroll round the garden followed by a quick stretch
Station 1: 15 Jumping Jacks
Station 2: 15 Pushups
Station 3: 10 Second Walk/jog on the spot
Station 4: 15 Squats
Station 5: 20 Seconds Skipping
Station 6: Lunges - 10 Each Leg
Station 7: 15 Bicep Curls
Station 8: 10 Second Walk/jog on the spot
Station 9: Tricep Dips
Station 10: 15 Jumping Jacks

Repeat as many times as you feel inclined, finishing off with a 5-10 min cool down and stretch. If you have/get a fitball there are many ways you can incorporate that into a circuit routine.

Hope this helps :)

And whilst you're at it, please do some lunges for me :(

similarly as to previous posts, HITT is quick and very effective, there is a corse of video workouts called "insanity" i think its 20 minutes a day and looks very good I've often given it a thought of trying it, you do it in front of the tv

There is Insanity or there is Shred. I did shred for a while and found it a good way to get going, now I do my own workouts

There are loads of vids on you tube, you can literally take your pick.

I didn't start with that many! Built my way up to there. Use hand weights as I do the squats to strength different muscles too and have some variety otherwise I get bored!

I've as good as given up on the idea of running working for me so I just run 20 mins of intervals (about 3k) and then do a strength workout

You can start by doing them on your knees if you're finding it difficult. I watch TV whilst doing them. I can only do ~ 100 continuous press ups at the moment! Lowers my blood sugar better than a 10 km run :-)

Yes I've been trying them, maybe manage 10 in a row lol practice makes perfect though! Got to start somewhere
