Hello!

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just a few days ago, and I'd like to ask some alternatives for sugary cravings. Could you give me some alternative recommendations when you're craving chocolate, cake or cookies please? I think for me, I really need a cookie alternative, as I really like them.

Many thanks!

For a period, I was into different protein bars (Granade, Fulfil, etc). But I felt like I'm just teasing myself and often just reverted eating sugary treats. The only thing that worked for me was total abstinence and also cutting out all artificial sweeteners. The first few weeks were really hard, but now the cravings have gone. I do still have daydreams about byrrying my face in a pie or two, but that's my cue to drink plenty of water and find something to occupy myself with. I know this might not be the answer you are after, but that's my personal experience.

Hi GIAMARIE and welcome! Chocolate is an easy one if you can train yourself onto 100% cocoa solids (I get Montezuma's Absolute Black). You might have to work at it a bit, maybe going 70% and up over a while, but I find it a real treat now.

Cake and cookies, even the non-sugar/keto varieties, are triggers for me so I usually avoid them BUT a lot of people here on the forums use them and enjoy them without problems. Try a search for keto cake/keto mug cake or keto cookies for ideas on here or internet generally.

The other thing I find is that something salty often cures sweet cravings - I have some himalayan pink salt but you can buy salt crystals to lick for exactly this purpose!

I found the salt idea worked very well for me, and once the initial stage of avoiding carbs/sugars was over, the wanting of it disappeared completely. Given that we are all different, this may or may not be helpful to you, but my palate has become much more sensitive, and foods such as salads and vegetables actually have a sweet tang to them that I had never previously realised.

I do hope the experts on here can help you, otherwise it really is a case of biting the bullet.
With our condition we cannot have a free rein on everything we love, so it is tough love to yourself time if there is no alternative.
My levels went out of control early in the year and I have been on a yoghurt breakfast and one meal a day for 6months to get back in control, I have been told I must return to a better diet plan but I am just terrified of losing it again. I will add I have several other disabling conditions, but nailing down my diabetes and food intake is key.
Your health must come first, likes and loves need to take a back seat.

Thank you for your advise but I'm currently taking tests with the food I love after meal (2hours). Something that I normally enjoy to have actually didn't affect my blood sugar. I'm kind of glad. I just hope my life would be filled with possibilities and without things I love would be meaningless for me. But that's just my personal opinion and you could have thought things differently.

I have chopped up an Aldi dark chocolate bar which aren't too bad in carbs and mixed it with a big dollop of greek yogurt. When you've finished eating you feel more full but you've had some chocolate.

Hello while some of the answers here mean well, i don't think may be what you're looking for. if you are craving sweet you have to go low carb/ keto route only. Some people cut treats completely but like others on here low carb/keto treats help not going off the band wagon.
for making cakes/pies/biscuits etc use ground or flour almonds (or any nuts like coconut). Just type keto recipes and there are tons. 85% dark chocolate is good lidi and aldi have great affordable ones. Buy 100% cocoa powder and make brownies with almond flour with any low carb sweetner . i make biscuits with nut butters theres plenty of recipes.
Holland and barrett and planet organic have alot of keto options
surreal cereal is a great keto option for cereal it's in holland and barrett
adonis bars are really good especially the double chocolate ones
pulsin keto bars are fantastic but very high in fibre and the sweetners might make you fart a bit(sorry)
Personally for me i cut everything out but i struggled so this helps me stay on track. if you need any recipes let me know. remember protein fiber and fat is your friend. thats why nut and seed flours help with making keto versions of high carb food.
i would recommend buying low carb recipe books i have loads. Also cook cook cook make treats and take them with you when outside so your not tempted.
Best wishes

Hiya, thank you for your message. I can absolutely understand that some people prefer to stick with the strict routine where the others like myself prefer to have a little treat once in a while. I've actually tried with the dark chocolate both 70% and 85%, didn't affect my blood sugar at all. And it also helped me to stop craving having other snacks too! I'm just trying to find some alternatives during period, that's the only time when I'm craving sugary food or snacks I don't normally have. I've ordered some books for low carbs recipes and will look for recommendations in the low-carb sections, hopefully that'll help a little! To be honest, most of the time I'd just stick with water and green tea, really. I'm not a snack person overall. :)

Please be aware that @GIAMARIE is a very new T2 on insulin so a low carb/keto diet may not be the best thing for them at the moment.

I'm glad to hear the dark chocolate has helped and doesn't spike. I wish i was like you and wasnt a snack person. Also please look at @lovinglife comment regarding keto/low carb being newly diagnosed type 2 on insulin. Just be kind to yourself and make sure your blood sugar isn't too low and high.

Eating is my biggest chore. Dislike people saying, ‘Should you be eating that?’ or ‘Surely you could have one of those?’
If you can bake, the internet is full of sugar free cookie alternatives. You just have to beware that they’re not what they say! Shortbread made with ground almonds tastes fine but can never be shortbread. Your first step is to get a sweetener you like. I use Erythritol and xylitol as they both taste quite like sugar. Sugarfreelondoner.com has some nice recipes as does wholesomeyum.com. You won’t find anything in the shops, though. Fibre One used to make a caramel bar with only 4g carbs but took it off the market because ‘people prefer our cakes.’
Just scour the internet and you’ll find something you like.

That is how I cope with my need for chocolate sweet treat, always have some Greek yogurt in the fridge and add a bit of bran flakes for the texture with dark chocolate. Yum, very satisfying.

I don’t crave sweet much as I’ve never had a sweet tooth, didn’t eat a lot of cake biscuits etc before diagnosis. But last night I wanted more than my couple of squares of 95%, so I melted my choc very carefully in the microwave and had some very juicy & sweet strawberries, dipped 3 of them in the chocolate then put them in the fridge to set. Really hit the spot!
