hi all i have a question .....ive started on a low carb diet a few days ago my levels have come down a bit but i feel worse now than i did before my other diet wasnt that bad bt did have slighly high levels but i felt better now on the low carb diet i feel tired all the time i am constanly hungry even tho ive just eaten im trying to stay off the meds but i dnt think i will be able to i just feel like i want to eat all the time i have dizzy spells aswell any advice would be helpful thanks

When you start to low carb you are forcing your body to change its fuel supply. Rather than using carbs for fuel it now has to start burning fat for fuel. If you perserve you will start to feel better. You have to low carb for a minimum of 2 weeks to notice any benefits. I'm feeling pretty tired at the moment of rthe same reason. It will get better, some people call it the Atkins flu. Also the dizzy spells could be where your BG is lowering your body is giving you false hypo symptons because your not used to lower BG levels. That should also clear up soon.

Stick with it, I believe you'll be glad if you do.

thanks for your reply my levels wernt all that bad b4 higest was about 12 to 14 now they still around about 7 to 9 i was doing great on the metformin but unfortunally i couldnt say the same for my stomach ive tried a few different meds now all with same effect bad stomch and being sick i have asked my GP about insulin im worried tho about the weight gain as ive lost 3 stone and dnt want put it back on but i think i do need some sort of medication to help me out horrible feeling like this

Why don't you post a typical menu or two and we can see if we can tweak it?
Find some low carb snacks you like in the meantime

I think you'd get cravings on any diet. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water

I had much higher energy when I cut back on carbs, no more snoozing on the sofa! The hunger bangs went after 3 or few days and once the weightloss kicks in that is really motivating.

Lenny is right, try to stick at it if you can, its a common problem when first doing low carb, good luck, you can do it! the benefits are unreal

hi typical menu :
breakfast: eggs,bacon,tomatoes
lunch:rivita.low fat cheese spread,ham
snaks:low cal jelly ,peanut butter.on small water buscuits
tea:stew

wish i could take the meds as they did really help me ever since i came off them been feeling awful been off them since just before xmas as i was really ill off them .even on no meds over xmas and not really eating anything as couldnt stomch it my levels wer still about 7 to 9 which is good levels....but i suppose they not if your not eating at all getting quite fed up now as this been going on since june when i was diagnosed

Your body is adapting which is why you don't feel 100%. As others have said, it's temporary. You may have reduced your carb intake too quickly. It's better to gradually change your diet rather than suddenly. Stick with it and you'll reap the rewards.

i think you have to decide to go very low and let your body change to fat burning (i.e. try to put up with the feeling rotten for a while) or go medium/low and benefit from the reduced carbs but bouncing in and out of very low you may find your body doesnt know if its coming or going (i.e. should it burn carbs or fat), so you won't push through into the ketosis and start to feel better, i could be wrong I'm no expert, have you considered a salad at lunchtime? maybe with some cheese or cold meat, is the lo cal jelly sugar free? the water biscuits (ughh) be great to find an alternative, low fat crisps are pretty much the worse thing to eat, if you are going low carb enough to get into the fat burning then the body will need some fat to burn, so anything that says low fat isn't any good and won't fill you up so your be inclined to snack more often and they are made from potato so.... i hope some of this makes sense, I'm not trying to tell you what to eat just trying to help

hi no thanks any advice is welcomed ....i only ate no more than 150 carbs on the other diet and i found my levels where still high on that so i have reduced them Eg yesterday i ate 83 carbs all day and levels where anything from 7 to 9 i know i shudnt eat the crips haha and the jelly is 0.7 sugar and 0.7 carb .for luch i have rivita with cold meats and cheese the water buscuits i put peanut butter on them for a snack as they dnt have that many carbs in them .when i was on the meds the carb intake was fine about 150 to 180 a day i lost weight and my levels wer really good but now no meds i cant eat 150 to 180 a day as my levels would be to high only got good readings when i ate about 60 carbs a day which i cant stick to i find it hard work thanks for any help at all

60g a day sounds good, i doubt that would make you feel unwell though, you would probably have to go much lower to feel the atkins flu, maybe its something else, maybe its just the change in diet you need to adjust to, my advice would be to ask the doc and try to stick to unprocessed foods, as much veg and salad as you can tolerate, your doing terrific and i hope you start to feel better soon

thanks andy i think a trip back to the docs is on the cards again seems like im never away lol
