I was looking at an advert for easter chocolate (as you do...) and came across the following info
"Nutrition information per 100g (whole box of 12): 356 kcal, Proteins 3.7g, Carbohydrates 55g of which polyols 50.6g (giving "net carbs" of 4.4g) and sugars 3.2g, Fats 21.3g of which saturated 13.4g, Sodium 61mg, Fibre 9.7g."
Can anyone explain how the bold bit about carbs works for us ? do we count the 55 or the 4.4 ?? :?

Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols are usually incompletely absorbed into the blood stream from the small intestines which generally results in a smaller change in blood glucose than "regular" sugar (sucrose). This property makes them popular sweeteners among diabetics and people on low-carbohydrate diets. However, as for many other incompletely digestible substances (such as dietary fiber), overconsumption of sugar alcohols can lead to bloating, diarrhea and flatulence because they are not absorbed in the small intestine. Some individuals experience such symptoms even in a single-serving quantity. With continued use, most people develop a degree of tolerance to sugar alcohols and no longer experience these symptoms. As an exception, erythritol is actually absorbed in the small intestine and excreted unchanged through urine, so it has no side effects at typical levels of consumption.

Don't think I will bother.

Have the real thing in a smaller quantity. Good quality dark chocolate is much healthier than all these fillers and other types of sugars that just cause frequent trips to the loo and no health benefits. If you google "POLYOPS" there are explanations as to how to work out the carbs but it is still a bad idea.
Green and Blacks Easter Egg,. :D

Some people seem to digest sugar alcohols as if they were sugar (this varies between -ols with different individuals) so the carb count could be anywhere between 4 and 50g for you.

I prescribe 85% chocolate in small quantities, under 20g carbs in 100g so a square or two is probably doable, and without fear of brown trousers
