New and a bit worried about my eyes

Since my diagnosis last week, I have been on less than 40 carbs a day.

I have noticed that I'm still feeling tired and my eyes can sometimes be quite strange - not blurry so I can;t see, but like I can;t quite focus on things.

I'm off to the optician tomorrow (gonna be a busy day) but I wondered if any one has been through this and how long it took to clear (if it did).

1-2 months is not unusable, before vision stabilises when getting on to insulin therapy and the bg gets down and stable within reasonable levels. Therefor not best either to get e.g. glasses prescribed just yet, if just 1 week ago therapy was started (except if you really need and accept you need to get another pair some weeks/months later). Your vision is bound to change still before in stable mode.

Yes, it happens quite a lot to newly diagnosed. It is the blood vessels in your lens distorting.
Once you start getting control and getting your blood glucose levels down, then the distortion will go away. This will usually be a few weeks, unfortunately!
Your optician will tell you what to expect.

Since you were just diagnosed few days ago it will take a bit of time to get thos things back to normal.

Thank you for the reassurance. I thoought my sight was going for good.

Hi Tansolo, you are actually doing all the right things at the moment. Before diagnosis, your blood sugars will have been fluctuating wildly. This has a temporary effect on your eyesight. Once your control settles down, your sight should return to normal after a few weeks. The condition you are worried about is called retinopathy. This will only usually occur after years with diabetes that is poorly controlled. I have had diabetes for 25 years, and only have the very earliest signs of retinopathy. This does not affect my sight, and with the very tight control I now exercise I don't expect it to progress further.
In my opinion, low carbohydrate diets could save the majority of us from developing complications of diabetes. The fact that you have decided to eat this way at such an early stage of your journey as a diabetic puts you in very good stead for the future. Well done, best of luck, and do keep posting with any questions you might have along the way.

Hi Tansolo,

I had a period of a few months where my morning vision was very "soft focus", sometime it cleared mid morning, other times it didn't. I initially bought some cheap reading glasses which helped, then I started cutting carbs which reduced my sugar loading and my vision returned to normal within a week.

Hang in there!
