Hi I'm new to the forum and low carb dieting.
I started on gliclazide 13 days ago and also started low carb diet the same day.
I've had brilliant blood sugar results since starting, from 17 down to 5 and 6, not sure if its the glic or my new diet?

The thing that is getting me down is that I haven't lost any weight at all, I don't eat bread potaotoes pasta rice crisps biscuits sweets chocolate cake (all the things I used to snack on) I'm trying so hard, I have sooo much weight to lose I thought I would have at least lost a lb.

Do I need to give it longer? I was told the glic may make me put on weight, is this why I haven't lost weight?
I'm eating meat eggs cheese cream veg and salad and sugar free jelly :)

Can anyone see where I'm going wrong?
Thanks

You seem to have got the idea and it is difficult to suggest anything other than patience and going for walks. In my opinion the larger part of the drop in BS is probably due to the diet since, in my case, it had a much greater effect than the pills.

So go for a walk every day if you are able and then give it time.

Hi thanks for the reply, do you think I need to count calories as well as exercise?
I really don't exercise at all, only once per week when I meet my friend for a walk. I have Bipolar disorder and an anxiety disorder too and I find it very difficult to leave the house by myself.
I also take meds for bipolar that make you put on weight, I just wish I could lose a few lb.

There is an ongoing discussion about counting carbs, calories, fingers, toes etc. Best not to get involved in that in case the diet police get me. Count calories if it makes you feel better. Most people agree that you own a meter but since you have given your readings I presume you already have one.

It's a shame about the walking and general lack of exercise because it can be a big help for some people. If you can't find someone to walk with and a dog is not sufficient company then, I suppose, doing some exercise indoors is second best. There is formal exercise, dancing, jumping up and down to music and aerobics. Try some of them and do one you like.

I find exercise easier when I don't have a choice. I don't drive, and live in an area with plenty of hills. Many of my clients live at the tops of said hills, and I can't afford to get there via public transport. Therefore, if I want to get to them, I have to exercise!
It may help to have something else new to focus on too. My suggestion is to think of a skill you have always wanted to learn, or an instrument you have always wanted to play, anything really. Find a club/teacher/group for whatever that is! trying to make sure they are a fair distance away. Not 6 hours away at the top of a mountain, just far enough that you get a bit of a workout getting to them.
I have never been overweight, but the way I ate before low carbing, I certainly feel like I should have been. I found once I started the low carb diet, focusing a lot on my piano playing took my mind off constant eating. It started off as a struggle, but I soon started seeing the results. I finally managed to play pieces I had wanted to play for years, and my appetite got more under control because I wasn't giving myself as much time to think about food.
So to summarise, I suggest new hobby, walking to get to it, and focusing on that to take your mind off food. (I apologise if this seems like I am oversimplifying the possibilities, I know it takes a lot of work to make the changes we are aiming for).

Thanks again, I'll try some exercise in the house for now, see if that kickstarts some weightloss and I'm going to try and go out by myself, just 5 mins a day at a start, just to the bottom of the street and back.

Brilliant. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for your reply, you have given me some good ideas to think about :)

Hi, if you are taking 2 different meds that are supposed to encourage weight gain, then staying the same weight is good going, some people would say calorie counting is the way forward, you could (if you don't already) make a food diary using myfitnesspal app or on the pc, this will give you a breakdown of calories as well as carbs and everything else, if for example your eating a zillion calories a day then you could try reducing them for a week and see if that has any effect, but don't give up the low carbing your doing great and your bg numbers are the most important thing

Yes I agree with you, I'm so pleased with my blood sugars, the past 2 days they have been under 7 all day, they haven't been this good for years :)
I'll have to have a look at myfitnesspal, I don't think I'm eating too much though, just 3 meals a day and snack on sugar free jelly and salad if I do get hungry.
Think I'll have my lunch now of ham and cheese omlette yum :)

:) sounds scrummy

well if you are eating so well, tracking it may reveal you are in fact eating too few calories, this can have the same effect with the lack of weight loss, either way its handy to know, because this helps formulate a plan

edit: do you have double cream with the jelly? sooo good

edit edit if you are eating too few double cream will help bump it up lol

There is a woman on Youtube called Leslie Sansone who does walking at home exercise routines. They are simple to follow so it is possible to watch telly while following what she is doing at the same time. Good for building up your legs for outdoor walking. Good luck Swinks :)

That sounds great! Thanks! :)

Also I've been having really bad headaches, could it be the gliclazide (I take 30mg slow release) or the diet?
It feels like a hangover :(

Thank you both for your replies, I've had a quick look at the walking videos on youtube, they look good!

It mentions on the dietdoctor website about headaches, well I've had one for more than a few days, I'm drinking more but can't seem to get rid of it, its killing me!

Hi Swinks. I'm only on day 4 of LCHF but have had headaches. IVe put it down to lack of fluids. They get better if I drink plenty. Mind you it's hard to keep up with all the weeing! If your only toilet is upstairs you'll be getting some exercise already ;)

Hehe I'm the same, weeing for England! But sadly extra fluids haven't helped :(
I hope it gets better in the next few days because I really feel rough!
