Hiya,
I'm new here and stumbled across this brilliant site so hello, I am looking for a bit of advice so here I am. I had a health check at the kids school last week and my blood sugar reading was 6.5 the lady wasn't to concerned about this but my mum suggested it was a little high. I am 28 yrs old and about 1.5 stone over weight, I have however lost 2 stone since January but I think that is more to do with a relationship break up and the stress of a disabled child other than anything else.

My paternal grandfather has type 2 diabetes so yesterday i got him to check my bloods for me as i felt lethargic and they were 7.7. so i bought myself a accu sure and took them myself this morning at 8am i last drank anything at 11pm and they were 8.0.

Symptomatically i have an increased thirst however i had put that down to the anti depressants i am taking but in hindsight i have had them before and never felt like this. also i seem either really down and sluggish or really alive and awake :? . tiredness, leg pain which i had thought was varicous veins returning, occassional night sweats and recurrent boils on my ear lobe.

Do you think with the bloods i have had that i should worry or am i adding up 2+2 and getting 5?

am booked in for fasting bloods tomorrow.
thanks
Sue

HI sue
You sound like me about 2 months ago! I found out that i was type 2!
I know that it is stillweird for me!
with family memebers having it there is aloways that chance that you have it!
I am 33 years old! MY mum is type 1, my grandparents were type 1 as well!
Luckly i am type 2!
Well done on the weight loss!
There are lots of people on here who know alot more than me!
If you are diabetic, then you do need to cut all white bread, pasta, rice, etc,all sugary drinks, fizzy drinks etc!
i am sure some of the great people on here will help you out!

Hi Sue. I am so confused - we have loads of Sue's here !!
Welcome.

You need to wait and see what results you get with the tests. You may be Diabetic, You may be nothing of the sort. Lots of things can give similar results.
Once you know the true position let us know and we will answer your questions for you.
Good luck for now.

Ken.
:D

hya sue and welcome,
you have done the right thing by seeing dr and getting fasting bloods done,
try not to worry as if it is type 2 it may well be manageable by diet and exercise alone, ask as many questions as u need and let us know how u get on :D

Hi Sue,
Well you have done three things right so far, lost weight, seen doc and most important found Diabetes.co.uk, lol.
Wecome to the club, I can only say you will find many friendly people hear of all ages and experence.
Ask anything you want to know, dont worry that you may think it sounds stupid, ASK. We have seen it all ourselves we all started at some point.

Hiya
I think Cugila has pretty much summed up what I would say.
A history of diabetes in your family does increase your risk, but try not to worry yourseld too much. There could be lots of other reasons, various foods release their energy at different times, have you been eating anything slightly out of the ordinary?
Your results are not massivly high so if you find out that you do have diabetes there will be no harm done, however your blood levels can be heightened because of the stress that you have said you are under, and because they are higher might explain your increased thirst.
That said you have done the right thing in booking yourself an appointment, you would be kicking yourself if you ignored it and later found you are diabetic.
But can I just say well done for the weight loss, whats your secret?!?
Good Luck for tomorrow, and if you do need support everyone on here is brilliant!
