Hi everyone!
I feel like I’m really struggling at the moment.
Quick history:

I was diagnosed with type 2, exactly 2 weeks ago. But we estimate that I’ve been living with this for at least 2 years. My HbA1c was 121 - I’m 31 years old and a few stone overweight.

I was started on Metformin - lasted a week, because I was getting hives/itching all over. I was changed to Gliclazide (80mg) 6 days ago. I’ve been testing my BG since then.

few things I’m worried about including the fluctuations in my sugars, and how Gliclazide works. And it makes me feel hungry alllll of the time. I’ve drastically reduced my carbs (less than 100g per day) and changed my whole diet and routine.

This is what my BG looked like yesterday:

Morning, before food: 11.5mmol
2 hours after breakfast (and gliclazide): 14.1
After lunch and 1.5L panic drinking water: 8.5
2 hours post dinner: 12.1

this morning, after 12 hours of no food

I don’t have a diabetes nurse - I speak to my practice nurse. She’s amazing and lovely and got me to have a needle after 17 years of being terrified. I don’t think she’s a diabetes medication expert. I have an appointment with her tomorrow.

I’ve actually continued itching post-metformin so I might ask to go back on that alongside gliclazide.

if anyone can offer any guidance, advice, or tips I would be so grateful. I feel like I’m trying everything I can and there’s just no consistency (I know it hasn’t been long but I’m worried about the damage being done)

thanks,
Toni

What sort of foods are you eating?
Is good that you have reduced your carbs but some of the forum have found they need to go even lower and you might fall into that bucket

Hi and welcome @Tonirainbows :)

Unfortunately when you run high blood glucose levels your body isn't processing glucose efficiently and therefore you can feel hungry as your cells are crying out for energy. I appreciate your not under a diabetes nurse however your levels are still high and so you should be getting more support on bringing them down, speak to your nurse today to see if they can review your case, your only 2 weeks in so may take time to adjust, keep drinking lots of water as your doing but get another appointment and get a review, best wishes.

Thank you
My nurse works Wednesday - Friday, and I have an appointment with her tomorrow. I’m going to mention my worries and how high my readings are, despite low carbs. I might ask to go back on metformin with gliclazide. For today, I’m going to drink as much water as I can and control my readings that way. Thanks for your support!

Diet and a meter is absolutely essential to kicking this down the road. I was 122 at diagnosis and fortunately I found this forum before I got the usual rubbish advice from the nhs.

That gives me some hope! What worked best for you? I’ve reduced carbs to less than 80g a day - and none after dinner at all!

Metformin doesnt make much of a difference to blood sugar but it does have other benefits. One of those is appetite suppressing which I found helpful. Stay around here, read, ask questions and you'll get really helpful advice.
Jo's nutritional thingy is really useful and it was a great starting point for my LC eating.

When I was dx, I decided I would go keto, less than 20g per day. I am still keto nearly 3 years later.

Have a look at dietdoctor.com for ideas.

I feel this is a sustainable way of eating for me.
