Firstly welcome to the Diabetes Forum. Your readings of 7.1 mmol/L for both fasting blood tests shown that you have crossed the criteria threshold and do have diabetes.
It's not the end of the world, it's the start of a new beginning, and now you know that you have diabetes you can learn to live with the condition. Millions of us have diabetes and we get by.
Take on day at a time. Though being able to test your own blood glucose levels at home is a good thing, for some reason (cost to the NHS) they have decided that Type 2 on diet control alone don't need to test their blood glucose. There actually wrong and This may pRoove to be a false economy in the long term.
If you choose a sensible diet that is appropriate to you (many use a Low Carb High Fat diet) you can keep your blood/glucose levels well controlled just through diet alone, and if it is with a little exercise along the way then you should be fine.
There is much to learn and absorb about diabetes when you are first told that you have it, so take each day as it comes and if there is anything that you aren't sure about please ask here on this site. The information is from real diabetics and The best that you will ever find.
