Hi I wonder if anyone can help me my partner was diagnosed this week with type 1 and has been put on injections 4 times a day he's a bus driver and is scared he will loose his license does anyone else do driving for a living ?
Also is there any food people can recommend that will help his blood sugar come down thanks :-)

Hi and welcome. I'm not sure of the DVLA rules for commercial driving but for normal drivers we have to test within 1/2 hour of driving and then every 2 hours whilst driving; check with the DVLA. There may be other rules for licence renewal as well. Ref diet for diabetics, your partner needs to reduce the carbs in his food and increase the proteins and fats if he wants or needs to. Keeping the carbs down will reduce the amount of insulin he needs and at the same time reduce blood sugar swings and the risk of a hypo; do use the meter to check if you make changes. Is you partner carb counting with his rapid insulin? This is important to aid blood sugar control. Come back with more questions.

Hi Sian/Dave, I am T1 and hold LGV license. Initially, you will need to inform DVLA who will probably restrict your license. You should still be OK to drive cars. You will need to provide 3 months worth of meter readings and prove good control to a DVLA approved consultant before you get your license back. It will be restricted to 12 months. The DVLA will provide necessary paperwork. It's a bit of a pain to be honest but can be done :-)

Hi can I ask ruff what your blood sugars are ? And do they ever go high or low ? Thanks for your help

My levels are pretty good and I rarely hypo. They will literally go through every reading for the last 3 months ( well, they did with me ). If they see a low reading, they will ask you about it and they will look at the next reading to ensure you treated it. Their main priority is to satisfy themselves that you test regularly and remain hypo aware. Obviously, they will expect you to know DVLA testing rules, 30mins prior to driving, test every 2 hrs etc. All the info is available on-line.

At the moment his are still between 9-18 which is a lot lower than last week they were unreadable, did they say anything about high readings sorry for all the questions but it's really helpful the answers your giving
