New Diagnosis

Hi all. My daughter was diagnosed Type 1 almost 5weeks ago and since going back to school, has several hypos a day. Her insulin ratio has been changed to try prevent this however is there a ‘good’ lunch I can give her to help? She has a sandwich, crisps etc (typical kids lunch) but should I be giving her something higher in carbs to help boost energy for playtime? Any advice would be appreciated.. thank you!

Hi @CalliesMum Sorry to hear about the hypos they are a pain. It sounds like your daughter could be experiencing a honeymoon which is common amongst newly diagnosed when insulin therapy starts the pancreas can start to spurt some insulin out again which is a temporary phase. The best suggestion is to speak to your DSN and get her insulin doses adjusted rather than carb loading, just ensure that she has glucose close to hand until adjustments can be made and perhaps a few jelly babies before playtime to ensure she has glucose on board to avoid the lows, it does get easier to manage once the honeymoon phase is over.

Hi. I agree you need to keep in touch with the DN so the dosage can be adjusted. Note that even for children having too many carbs will not increase 'energy' as such and result in bigger blood sugar swings. The best carbs are the slower acting ones with some fat and fibre as they are absorbed more slowly. If your daughter is having a sensible amount of carbs but still having hypos then the insulin may need to be reduced; discuss with the DN. Crisps aren't ideal (but kids love them!) and if your daughter can eat wholemeal bread sandwiches it will help.

Thank you so much for the advice. I’m worried I keep bothering the nurses but I’ll speak with them again
Didn’t know about jelly babies but I’ll look into that too!

Brilliant thank you! It’s a huge learning curve and we are getting there but it’s an information overload She has 50/50 bread but I’ll definitely try switch to whole meal if that might help too!
