Hi my 16year old daughter just been told by gp she has type 2 she is not overweight gets exercise and has sugar free drinks no sweets as her older sister has type 1 so most things are sugar free.gp never gave any info to us just that she has type 2 will she need to test glucose don't know anything about type 2 any help would be goid

Most people on this site would advise testing to find out which foods raise the blood sugar to unacceptable levels. The NHS tends not to recommend testing since they can't afford to fund it. They do supply testing equipment to people who are likely to go hypo but seem to think that years of being hyper is ok.

Hi. I would suspect the diagnosis. If someone is 16 years old and not overweight I'll be quite confident (as an amateur!) that she is T1 not T2. NICE Draft DEC 2015 T1 Guidelines say:

"Diagnose type 1 diabetes on clinical grounds in adults presenting with hyperglycaemia, bearing in mind that people with type 1 diabetes typically (but not always) have one or more of:
 ketosis
 rapid weight loss
 age of onset below 50 years
 BMI below 25 kg/m2
 personal and/or family history of autoimmune disease."

I would challenge the GP's diagnosis. There are two tests, GAD & C-peptide, that can help diagnose but NICE suggests these should no longer be needed (cost?). The treatment regimes may be similar between T1 & T2 but T1 may need something to stimulate the pancreas (e.g. Gliclazide) and later insulin. Do keep an eye on your daughter's blood sugar as T1s can go into Ketosis then Ketoacidosis fairly quickly. If the sugars go into the 20s then seek urgent assistance.

BTW, T1 is where the pancreas is failing to produce insulin often due to antibodies particuarly if young and carbs can't be used. T2 is usually due to excess weight where the pancreas is producing insulin but due to insulin resistance in the muscle cells the body can't use the insulin so the carbs can't be used. Similar result but very different reason.
