Spicy food which is too hot. Nasty people who have no idea on your life journey but feel the need to comment and be cruel.
I have been prediabetic for some time. Mind you I knew had gone off the rails during the last few years. Was due a blood test but as I am having surgery soon everything eas done early.

Bp now under control. Had a HbA1c and was 58 which I believe is equivalent to around 7/8
Over the last three weeks have gone back on my low carb/Keto.
Morning reading up even though I do 16/8 fast, the rest of the day readings start dropping.

Hospital rang this morning and were going to operate on 20th but now pushed back until end of October.

To say I am pretty immobile and struggling is an understatement.

What else I can do to get the numbers down. Due another blood test on Sept 5th.

Once I can properly walk again sure I shall improve.

Not on Diabetic medication yet!

Thank you all for your help.

Hi @filly , I'm sorry you both need surgery and have to wait longer for it.

Unfortunately stress and illness both push blood sugar levels up, and if you can't walk properly that means you can't really use exercise to help bring them down.

Now I am not a doctor so this is just an opinion, but I would be surprised if they used an hba1c of 58 as a reason to delay your surgery, so bringing your levels down is more of an issue for your health and well being.

If I were in your postion, I'd just keep with the low carbing.

Hopefully some people who know what they are talking about will post soon (as a T1 I'm not really qualified to comment on this sunject )

Good luck and virtual hugs.

The usual cut-off for elective surgery for those living with diabetes is 69, so it may well be there are other contributory factors in your delay?

In the meantime, just try to be as mobile as you can and focus on nutritionally dense food, going light on the carbs.

Whilst disappointing for you, the extra few weeks will fly by, I hope.

I was due surgery at the end of April that was delayed due to my diagnosis of uncontrolled diabetes. In the letter from the Hospital (Sunderland Royal Infirmary) they stated that their policy was not to do elective surgery if the HbA1c was above 63 (when on diabetes medication) or above 54 (if only controlled by diet).
Since the end of April, without changing my essentially sedentary lifestyle, by following a low carb approach to eating, my HbA1c has dropped from 74 to 41. So my advice, keep to the low carb approach and hopefully it will work for you too. Oh, and I read it on here that morning numbers are often the last to drop (mine certainly are taking their time).

Thank you so much for everyone who has replied. Very helpful. I am even wondering if they understand the numbers! My pre op nurse had a hissy fit.....
Anyway shall carry on hope everything comes down before the end of October. When I ring again shall ask what their criteria is for surgery. Just do not want to lose my place on the list. I have waited so long and knee so bad. I knew it was bad but it wasn't until the consultant said he would straighten it I realised just how cockeyed it was Onwards and upwards.

Hi. Keep going with the low carb diet and perhaps you need to start some meds such as Metformin?
Still waiting for the second blood test to come back. Because of side effects and how I tend to react to medications they will have to look for something I will tolerate. I shall post again once I know what is happening. End of October a way off still. At least I am loosing weight....

Hba1c came back and now 56% down 2%
Started on Metformin slow release and bladder tablets increased.
Still on track for surgery. Just have to ring up and speak to secretary now.

Good luck filly I hope your surgery goes well and you get your mobility back asap.

Having mobility issues is no joke as I know only too well [hugs]

Well lets just hope that the pre op nurse never has the experience of being a diabetic eh! Makes me so very cross where has the empathy gone xxxx

Here is an update on my progress with knee surgery.
Got a letter asking me to go to the hospital. Thought it odd.
When I got there was told I had a new surgeon.... mine had left. Very strange as he had only been there 5 mins, so to speak. He also told me he was still house hunting with his wife. I spoke to said surgeons secretary in Dec.

So, waited to see new surgeon.
Everything has to be redone. Tests, pre op, xrays.
Now have to wait another 3/4 months for knee replacement.
Just spoke to someone and the very same thing has just happened to a friend in Scotland.

How frustrating! But maybe a blessing in disguise in that the new medics will be better and so will the results.

The one I had was new. The new one usually works at the local Private hospital. So outcome will be interesting. Wondering if they will send me there for surgery.
