New here, but not newly diagnosed.

Dear Freema,
Thanks for your wonderful warm welcome. Honestly, I didn't know which icon to click, and wish I could've clicked them all :) Losing weight is not the main point, but losing BS is. Unfortunately the two are related, as you know. I once read that only 5% of all "losers" manage to keep their weight down. Something to do with what one's body is used to and has come to regard as "normal". Not nice to know, but that's how it is, apparently.
As I mentioned I've been lurking for some weeks, and noticed the friendly and helpful atmosphere, and am pleased that I signed up. I started following you, not as in stalking, but because being Danish it's good to have a fellow Dane who might know the ropes and her way around the health care system in Denmark better than I do. Believe you me, it doesn't take a lot :)
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out tomorrow.

I am not good at handling the healthcare system here... but maybe we can get something else valuable out of knowing each other in here anyways
:):):):):):)

Thank you so much, shelley262. We can only do our best, which for me wasn't good enough till recently, but I enjoy my progress so far. I feel so much better. I'm actually awake! I look forward to being a part of this forum :)
Hello and welcome, you have joined a great group of people from different parts of the world but we all share this condition and regardless of where we are or where we come from we are willing to support each other. What more can anyone ask for than a friend who doesn’t judge us, completely understands what we are dealing with and celebrates all our little victories.
Good luck and remember you are not alone.

Yes, I did know about 'char'. I believe I picked up the term in Sheffield in the early 80es.
My goodness, your english is amazing!!! IMO that alone should qualify you for a visa. But it will be surprising if any foreigners want to come here once we have finalised our disgrace.

According to Jenny Ruhl, one of the most authoritative writers on T2 diabetes, losing weight in order to lower bg is much more successful than losing weight for more vague, less pressing reasons. If I want to lose weight in order to fit into my jeans I can always put it off to another day, but here we know we are threatened with worse than just the expense of a new pair of jeans. Certainly, looking at the signatures of people posting, many seem to have lost a lot of weight and kept it off, though of course there are also sad stories of weight regained to read.

I have just checked Jenny Ruhl's site and she says, "Weight Loss Diets Usually Fail but Diabetes Diets Can't Afford To Fail. The stakes are too high!" You can read the rest of her article here: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14046989.php

I don't buy that argument about the body's returning to it's habitual weight. IMO it's more the mind's habits that are to blame. We have our ideas as to what constitutes a proper, satisfying meal and they are hard to give up. It is also a sad fact that the more weight a person loses, the less calories they actually need. Many people just don't think of this, maybe they can't bear the injustice of it, that having made this big effort one is now being punished with shorter rations!

Well, I suspect we Brits don't see ourselves as foreigners, ever. When we are in another country, we find ourselves surrounded by foreigners, with inferior and incomprehensible languages, ludicrous or despicable ways, even their clocks are out of sync with ours. When I was a child, it was well known that foreigners were incapable of making a nice cup of tea, and to get one in places like Nice we were obliged to patronise "English Tearooms" run by genuine English ladies, but perhaps the skill of tea making is not as important now as it used to be.

I suspect that you shouldn't take that statement too seriously. She's just displaying her very un-foreign sense of humour :)
