One thing to point out is that it isn't only sugar products you should be wary of. All carbohydrates get converted into blood glucose eventually, except fibre. A slice of white bread, a quarter of a cup of cooked white rice, and three teaspoons of sugar all have about 12 grams of quickly converted carbs, and on me they all have almost exactly the same effect.
Your experience may vary, but it's important to look at the whole picture. I can tell you however that the effort it requires is worth it.
