Has anyone tried the new low carb bread available in Waitrose. A bit pricey at £1.99 but there is an introductory offer of £1.32.

There is a review of it here,
http://healthehelen.wordpress.com/2013/ ... -tried-it/
The slices are smaller than a normal loaf and each slice contains 4.16 carbs.

There is also a high protein bread that is new on the shelves but at £5 per loaf it is out of the price range of most people.

The only advantage that I can see is you could get away with eating the bread toasted for breakfast or make sandwiches without adding too much protein.

There's a very BIG adavantage for those of us who believe in and follow low carb diet regimes for good BG control in that we can eat a couple of slices of that and still be within our targets for total daily carb allowance..on my regime of around 30gs a day EVEN I can enjoy poached egg on toast once in a while..THAT's the advantage! The food industry is listening Albeit slowly and the worm will turn

Paul,
The quote you have referred to is about the protein bread, 13.9 carbs per slice, not the LC one..

Wish there was a like button on here. Not sure if we have a Waitrose locally

OK..so what is your opinion of the Livlife low carb bread that is on sale at Waitrose or ocado home delivery?

I have tried the LivLife bread. The slices are tiny and feel a bit rubbery and chewy. The texture is better when toasted and the slice shrinks slightly.

I don't think I will give up on the Bergen Sunflower and Chia just yet...

We don't have a waitrose anywhere near where I live but my hubby did bring me some this week when he was in London, I found it pretty **** yucky  and put it out for the birds after having a sandwich made with it, mind you the poor birds didn't seem that impressed either.

I wasn't surprised I didn't like it really, I don't like much of the "replacement" foods and prefer to go without something or have a small portion of the real stuff.

I am fine with burgen soya and linseed bread so will. Stick to my occasional slice of that me thinks

The Livlife bread at £1.99 is a little pricey considering it's a 500g loaf compared to the normal size of 800g, however if it does take off and becomes popular they may/may not reduce the price or introduce some promotional deals with the big supermarkets.

Interesting that each slice is much smaller, that's how the Slimcea bread (not available anymore) and Weight-watchers got away with their boast that their breads were lower in calories, each slice of bread was much smaller than a standard loaf which was exposed on Food Unwrapped 2 weeks ago.

Still if you've got the money and you need to watch the carbs carefully then it's worth the price to pay to have a sandwich or toast again, the Dr Zak's at £5 is a big rip-off and I can't see it lasting that long.

The bread sounds a lot like Free from bread, over priced, not such a pleasant taste, small slices and I rarely eat it. I too put some out for the birds in my garden and they do not like it either, erm sensible birds ?
I must admit that I really, really miss 'normal bread' ( Wheat, Rye, Oats) just one small slice toasted with some margarine ( I don't eat butter) just heaven :D

A smaller loaf or a thinner slice can make all the difference to the overall carbs and cals in a slaice of bread.

A little off topic but why can you not ask to have a loaf sliced "thin" any more?

Sainsburys and Tesco both do a very nice wholegrain loaf which I buy in the small loaf size and as they are baked in store I like to get them "cut" as fresh bread is not that easy to slice. Tesco have one standard slice size m=now which equates to a Medium slice and Sainsburys offer Medium or Thick sliced.

I know that in the past supermarkets used to offer Thick, Medium or Thin sliced baked bread but not any more it seems, is this a way to get the customer to eat more bread or to eat the loaf faster as it can not be thinly sliced?

A small thing to get mad about but I always wonder why they cant set their slicing machines to Thin any more????

Thanks, I didn't know know Burgen had different varieties. I've only tried the soya and linseed.
They also make a buckwheat and poppy bread.
You can download a money off voucher on their website.

My Tesco's do both but it's worth noting that the buckwheat and Poppy bread contains more carbs per slice if you're watching the carbs

Thanks Paul, maybe I will just look out for the sunflower one. They sell the soya and linseed in Asda, not noticed the sunflower one.
