Hi I'm type 2 on 2000 mg metformin n still having spikes of 14 in morning after fasting.been docs today n dn put me on gliclazide and took one at 10 am my bloods dropped to.3.6 is this right??????
 
When I take my BGs and if I get what I consider to be an implausible result (granted, not that often), I just take it again from another finger. That nearly always results in a more appropriate result.

I was on Gliclazide until about a month ago and only ever had a 1 -2 mmol/l improvement over whatever other meds I was taking and when I came off it, only had a very modest deterioration too. So, for me, it didn't make anything like that much difference - but I titrated the dose up gradually too, so my improvements were at a very modest resulting pace too.

Consider also the possible effects of liver dumping caused by low BG overnight and the liver dumping glucose into the blood to compensate. Perhaps you could take your BG every hour after the evening meal and if they are falling before going to bed but are high in the morning, that sounds like liver dumping. I have read that just having something to eat in the morning will switch off the liver dumping.
A reading of 3.6 doesn't sound good, technically a hypo, and is going to screw up any wish to drive somewhere, something you need to consider when on gliclazide, also the possibility of gaining weight.
This is my understanding of how it works and I would have thought a much better idea of your over BG readings would have been required before prescribing gliclazide, probably an HbA1c which as you know would only take a minute.

Hi,

You don't say what the dosage is or how many times per day you have been told to take it.

It is best taken just before food rather than without.
 
Hi. Are you slim or overweight? Gliclazide can cause low blood sugar as it stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. The fact that you reacted strongly suggests your pancreas is in a reasonable state. You need to discuss the dosage with the GP.
