New member - needle scratch

Hi,
I'm a new member and wanted to ask a question.

My husband of 30 years has many health problems including diabetes and I give him his insulin injections. Today after his injection I was putting the top back on before getting rid of the needle when I managed to somehow miss and scratch myself, drawing blood. No idea how I did this as I'm usually so careful.
I washed the area immediately and soaked the hand in diluted disinfectant too.

My question is, as this is my husband's needle, is there anything else I need to do?
None of his health issues can be transmitted. To the best of our knowledge he doesn't have Hep C or anything else "nasty".
He has had blood transfusions in the past, his last being 27 years ago.
We are both fully immunised against tetanus.

My opinion is that the risk is tiny. Has anyone else had a similar situation?

Hi Kathy,

I don't think you need to worry too much about the needle scratch, but if it plays on your mind then consult your pharmacy, doctor or practice nurse for reassurance.

Back in the 70's 80's and 90's. I used to recover children who had had their teeth out with gas. I did this over a period of 20+ years on and off. Not only did I have to wake them, and console the parents, I also had to stop the bleeding before they could go home. I did this with no gloves, mask or safety glasses until the late 80's. I also had some needle stick injuries from needles for numbing mouths and scaling instruments used to clean teeth by a dentist over the years, as I was a dental nurse. I had hepatitis inoculations every 3 years after the early 90's, as health and safety was then coming into force in the workplace.

I am pleased to say I am still healthy (even with type 2 diabetes).
You have shared many things with your husband no doubt over the years, so I do not think that this injury could harm you

Thanks for replying so quickly Mazbee, and sharing your own experiences.

Yes! This is exactly what I was thinking but was struggling to word it.
If this was a needle dropped outside I'd probably be freaking out. But as it's my husband's I think the risk is tiny.
