Hello, and welcome, @Peter Zippo .
Have you had a diagnosis?

It would help if you could let us know what type of diabetes you have and what medication you are on.
But if you're at a BS of 22 and above for a week, I'd definitely wanting to talking to your diabetes team about it asap, as it is not good to be that high.

Hi All

I would like some advise I have had a blood sugar level of 22.0 for over a week! I am very worried

My first piece of advice would be to go and see your doctor.

My second would be to ask whether you've checked for ketones, as if these are high as well you at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis and need to visit accident and emergency.

Thirdly, welcome to the forums. Can I ask whether you've been diagnosed with diabetes yet, and if so, which kind?

Hi

I have Type 2 ! And I take Metformin ! I have been on antibiotics for a stomach complaint recently , I have only just started checking my bloods and I am concerned that it’s so high

Appreciate any advice

You need to see your doctor urgently, as these levels are too high. (Having said that, illness and stress both push up blood sugars, so hopefully you weren't running that high before the infection. )

If you're in the UK, I'd suggest ringing 111 to get immediate advice.

Agree wholeheartedly.......I never had blood sugars higher than 12 even in the full grip of sepsis taking 3 different IV antibiotics with spiking temperatures of 42/43.......you're either quite ill or your testing machine is out of whack......dial 111

Thanks for your advice! Have Doctors’s appointment at 11.00 today !

Will update you all ...! Thanks
Good luck. Please do keep us informed of how you are getting on.

Hi All

Well just got home after a 9 hour stint at the Hospital! Several pricked fingers later ! Left with a Blood Sugar of 23.2 ! Consult suggestions are to go to a Diabetic Clinic ! Continue with my Dietician ! And discuss additional medication with my Doctor! Not happy

I'm surprised they didn't keep you in!!!

Wow, I'm speechless. I would have expected them to give you some additional medication, even temporarily, and maybe put you on insulin till your sugars normalised. About your only options now are lots of water, minimum carbs and as much exercise as you can stand. Minimum carbs are likely to be the most help.

I call that a severe lack of care. So sorry.

ps I'd advise getting some ketone testing urine strips and check for ketones if your sugars keep high. Even T2s can get diabetic ketoacidosis.

pps Did you even get to speak to a diabetic consultant at the hospital? I'm still incredulous that they sent you home with that level of blood sugar. It confirms all my suspicions about hospitals' inability to cope with diabetics (other than intensive care, who are excellent).

Hi Ellie

Sorry they did give 4mg of Insulin!! And I had a ketone test that was clear!

I guess you are right low carb and exercise!

I can’t believe that out of the 9 hours I was there about 7.5 were just sitting waiting

Thanks for your concerns and comments much appreciated

Cheers Pete

To be fair you waited over a week before going.....so they probably thought 7.5hrs wasn't much after triage, insulin and ketones test.....some of that time was probably taken up with pharmacy organising drugs to take away.....it's a known bottleneck in the NHS discharge procedure(I'm assuming you're in the UK).

I think if you presented on any other day of the week with the symptoms you described you'd have been kept in for the night at least.......but on friday(AKA Fight Night), bed pressure in the NHS is at it's worst

And I had a ketone test that was clear!

That's awesome. Look, it's DKA that could kill you in the short term, so I guess if they've checked that that isn't an issue you're probably better off at home than exposed to germs in the hospital.

Good luck, hopefully you can get your sugars down and your infection cured (the two go together).

Hi Pete.

Sorry to hear that, get better soonest..

As for waiting . Sadly that's HOSPITAL time for you.

Still seems scandalous, but @Traceymac23 Friday Night is FIGHT Night, does ring true, sadly..(much experience with mum n dad, when both ailing ).

But as suggested if ketones good, better off at home.......fewer germs etc.

All the best.

Trust me......I am the Head Porter at a busy London Hospital.....as well as currently being a patient.
