Hi

I am 43 years old and have recently (8 weeks ago) been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. On diagnosis my BG levels were 13.6. I was initially put on metformin and diet control. After 3 weeks my BG levels had risen to 15.9. I was referred to the hospital and the Metformin was titrated up to 2.5mg. My BG continued to rise 10 days later my BG levels were at 30.2 and I had ketones. I was admitted to hospital via the ED with hyperglycemia. After spending two days on intravenous insulin my BG levels were reduced sufficiently to be transferred to insulin injections. I was discharged after a week. I am now on Lantus (26 units per day) and Novorapid (36 units at the moment per day) plus correction doses. My BGL is still very volatile ranging from 6.3 to 25.4 (not on the same day). I am in contact the diabetes nurse every two or three days to help me manage the insulin. The dietician said I am doing the right thing diet wise and I am hoping to go back to work next week.

On the bright side, I no longer have a weight problem as I have lost 3.5 stones since July!!

Hi Sabtax and welcome to the forum :) On this forum you will find a thread called "BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS." written by our forum monitors. You will find this very interesting to read especially as I think this forum's view on diet will be helpful to you. It is not quite the same as what you will probably have been told up to now. But for me it works and gets my levels down nicely. There is also another useful thread on the same forum suggesting questions you can ask when you visit the clinic/D nurse or specialist. :) Happy reading!

Hello Sabtax and welcome to a great well informed meeting place for those of us with diabetes and others who have to look after diabetics.
You have endured a rough ride but it reads as though the brake has been applied which is a good thing and well done on the weight reduction.
