Hi all.

So i've been diagnosed with non diabetic hyperglycaemia and at risk of diabetes with a HbA1c reading of 43. I have a ultrasound coming up to check liver aswell so guessing a potential fatty liver issue also.
total cholesterol is around 6 0r 6.5 i think.
I am overweight at 20st with a BMI of 35 so looking to lose weight and hopefully get these numbers back to where i should be.
My dad had diabetes so guessing that is also a factor but i'm grateful that it seems i can try to do something about it.

I'm taking this as my wake up call to do something about it and reading through this forum there seems to be a great supportive vibe so looking forward to sharing my journey.

I'm looking to start on the keto diet so any tips with getting started with that would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Keep in mind that with diabetes, metabolic syndrome is likely. Any or all of the following: obesity, diabetes, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. So don't be too shocked if the NAFLD ultrasound gets a positive result. Basically, you treat all of that the same way: cut carbs (and overly processed foods), and everything should normalise. So you're already barking up the right tree. Keep in mind this didn't come on overnight, and you don't have to get everything sorted out overnight either. Check foods for carb content, get yourself a meter, and start sorting through things as you go. No need to rush into anything.

I'm not entirely sure how one can have non-diabetic hyperglycemia with a prediabetic reading, but I guess they won't call it diabetic until you hit those numbers. Sematics, I suppose. You're just barely over the prediabetes diagnostic threshold, so... You won't have to do anything too drastic. Just cut out some stuff, see how your blood sugars and in a while, your liver responds. Keep getting checked every year or so, to see whether you need to cut more carbs to remain in the normal range.

You're asking the right questions, you're doing very, very well already!

Welcome to the forum @jstreakyc, there are lots of different meters out there, some more expensive than others I’ll tag one of our forum members @Rachox who has some great info on different meters

Thanks for the tag @lovinglife,

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews.

Links to the strips for future orders:

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular:

The strips are to be found here:

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)
