Hi,

I’ve just ordered a set of Strips for my Accu check Aviva, and by Murphy’s Law my meter has stopped detecting the strips, so it looks like I need a new one. I am Type 2, metformin and diet controlled and test so that I can “eat to my meter”. What do people recommend? I can always send the strips back to Amazon if I change brand, or else just replace what I have, which I have fo7nd adequate for the last 4 years.

To start with, I'd look up the telephone number for accu check, they might well send you a new one for free as they want you to keep buying their test strips
. To follow up, someone here will post about meters to help you choose :)

There's a good chance of this happening as well.

The meter is covered by a warranty so they should replace, unless it’s just the strips that are dodgy

If you have no luck with Accu check here’s some info on alternatives:

Here are some meters that are popular on the forum:

Taken from a post by @Bluetit1802 as she wrote it so nicely:

The most popular meters for self funding T2's are the Codefree and the Tee2 because the strips are much cheaper than other meters, and you need a lot of strips. You can't buy them in pharmacies.

Try here for the Codefree meter

and here for the extra strips

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

The Tee2 is here

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for either meter)

Not related to Diabetes meters but on the subject of warranty, I have had some good experiences recently.

I use a Leatherman Wave multitool at work. It saves my bacon an awful lot because it is convenient etc. Sadly it broke recently so I emailed Leatherman and explained that this tool had lead a hard life etc but now sadly it needs repair, could they give me a quote for repair / service?

They wrote back the next day and said they don't do repairs. However, the multi-tool has a 25 year warranty, Simply return the damaged item to them and they will send me a replacement. What a result! Whilst the Leatherman was away for repair I took to using my Swiss army knife, which I successfully managed to break. Thoroughly cheesed off with this I emailed Victorinox and asked about a repair. They also wrote back saying that "repairs are possible, just send it to us". Hoorah I said, how much would this be I asked. "Well, unless it is deliberate abuse the repair is free (excludes postage) as you have a lifetime warranty.

Would be nice if Accu Check did the same thing !!

Remember they give the meters to GP for free to give out, so as to sell the test strips.

I have never paid for a meter. I went online and filled out a questioner on the Accu-Chek website and 5 days later there was one at my door step. I’ve done it three times in the last four years.
Might be different in the UK

No that's how I got my contour next one took a little longer than five days though.

Accu check are amazing. I recently had problems with my fastclix, gave them an email and 3 days later a new one turned up. They also send out batteries for my meter when I email them. As has already been mentioned they want you to keep buying the strips so will probably send out a new one

The Accu test strips costing more than most may have something to do with their good service when meters stop working.

Also if you have a Accu-chek aviva it downloads your BG with wifi to the mySugr app. With that mySugr gives you a free up grade to the mypro version.
