New Snack Identified!

Just finished guzzling some onions.....rolled em in the marscapone.....then in parmesan......popped in the freezer for the longest ammount of time I could wait.......these are good! The soft tasty outside and then the crunch and bite of the vinegar....oh SockFiddler thankyou soooo much, these are a great way to boost the fats and are very satisfying for so few carbs.
You are a genius and I am so glad I found this thread!

Not a genius! Just one of those people who will literally try almost anything once!

Most of the time, the results are far less entertaining and tasty than this. But I've got some other crackers coming up!

Parmesan... I'd not thought of that! And then wrapped in a little bit of Parma Ham?

You have been sorely missed...!

Well! Variations on that theme...

I plopped out the onions onto some kitchen roll (vinegar stops the cheese from sticking!)
Lightly heated the cheese in the microwave (just 20 seconds on medium-high)
Bashed the peanuts into tiny pieces with a rolling pin (still useful after all!)

The trick is to get the right amount of cheese on them before you roll them in the peanuts (apologies to anyone with allergies). Too much and you'll overwhelm the onion; too little and the onion and chilli will fight. If you nail it, though, it's just awesome with the little moments of spice coming through.

Tesco Silver SKin Pickled Onions (9.9g/100)* https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/254885571

KP Spicy Chilli Peanuts (7.5g/100 carbs) http://groceries.iceland.co.uk/kp-spicy-chilli-flavour-peanuts-450g/p/55625

I used the slightly sweeter (and cheaper!) Tesco ones, but I reckon a little pickled onion is pretty much a little pickled onion in this case.

Next iteration might well involve some kind of ham or leafy thing. Possibly spinach so that you can roll them up and then stick them with cocktail sticks to serve at a party or something.

And @Mufflana - you're totally welcome on the Food Empowerment Mobile! Everyone is! Come on, @Guzzler - make the "going up a gear" sound now!

Happy Sunday, lovely folks :)

I think you have cottoned onto a winner there, Sock. Pickles, spices and cheese... nom nom!
I am now trying to think of ways to szhuszh up my celery smeared with peanut butter snack.

btw can you tell me if that is the right spelling of szhuszh?

I've honestly never tried to spell that word before - let's go with your spelling. Funnily enough, though, it's a word I use constantly. The hair-dryer is known as the "Huvver-szhuszher", the hand blender is the "szhuszh-szhuszh stick". I think you're onto something, Guzzler!

I've actually experiment with celery and peanut butter. Surprisingly good when you mix the peanut butter with a little finely chopped onion (or chives, if raw onion isn't your thing) and then some smoked paprika sprinkled over the top. It's edging towards a satay type thing, but it still quite fresh and tasty.

I'm also going through a fairly heavy lime juice phase at the moment: if it's bland and uninteresting, it gets half a lime over it. The only time that ended in actual inedible disaster was the cheese and bacon omelette - turns out tarragon was the winner for that one.

You may have thought I was joking: I'm genuinely looking for a way to have a food blog where lots of people can post their ideas and thoughts but it still remains "bloggy" (another not-a-word). Will let you know when I find something potentially useful.

Used to hate celery....but now love the crunch.....have you tried it with paté, blue cheese, or marscapone mixed with a little chilli and hebs....might szhuszh it up a bit?

Sounds good! I no longer snack but I like to try the family on new ideas, lower carb than Doritos or pot noodles which they eat far too many of, sadly.

(they're 5g/100 carbs!)...
OK, Sock, it took me three days but I worked it out. You meant they have 5g of Carbs for every 100g of onions, right? I couldn't see myself giving up a few days carb allowance for a spoonful of pickle.
Oh, and I hope Tor isn't fazed by onion breath!! :bag:
