NEW TECHNOLOGY -Is it for real?

Hi. My brother has been diabetic since he was 10, so 35 years or so. He is not on line, so asking opinions on something we came across. Apparently, a company have developed a watch that can keep track of you glucose levels, taking away the need to prick your finger to get a reading. My brother has always been told that the finger or palm are the only accurate place's, to be able to get an accurate result, as the arm etc, would only give a reading of what the bloods were 25-30 minutes earlier! Can it be accurate. The watches are not cheap at over 320 euro's and you would also have to pay a monthly fee to get the technology as well. What are your thoughts on this news and do you think it is real and could it actually give a false reading , if not actually taking any actual blood to test? We look forward to your thoughts

I assume you are talking about the watch doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment @thelovebadger0?

If so, the technology involved has been undergoing clinical trials for a while at Imperial college. It works using interstitial fluid rather than blood and is around 10 mins behind blood readings.

I'm slightly sceptical on this as I hadn't seen anything on the research side suggesting this technology was ready for prime time use yet, but it's certainly one to watch.

Hi, it sounds like the one. 10 minutes would be good right? Thanks for the feeback

It can't be far off now!
The technology is there, the theory is good and the application is under advisement!

The problem with initial technology is the price. It would take those who cannot afford it, the benefits of the watch.

I would have loved to have had one during my diagnostic tests and my testing and experimentation period and then for fasting and helping me to keep me in ketosis.

Do you mean this :

Like any CGM/FGM device it will always be slightly behind actual Blood glucose readings as they measure interstitial fluid as Tim rightly says. Any device like this won't comply with the DVLAs requirement to 'blood test' prior and during driving.

The Ktrack-glucose does look good though!

The advisory panel on diabetes and driving is at present looking into this:
'Dr Pratik Choudhary presented data on accuracy of CGMS and flash monitoring devices. It was noted that there is a variation in the accuracy of different devices particularly at lower glucose levels. In addition these methods measure interstitial rather than blood glucose. Current legislation requires “blood glucose” monitoring and a legal opinion is being sought concerning the interpretation of the legislation. The panel considered that for some drivers it may be as safe to drive with multiple readings from CGMS / flash monitoring using a device of appropriate accuracy as it would be using standard finger-prick blood glucose meters. However clear guidance on the appropriate use of devices and interpretation of data would be required.

Maybe there will be changes to the requirements in the not too distant future.

If Pratik has anything to do with it, I expect there will. He's one of the good guys.
