Hi there, I've just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It came as a bit of a shock so I'm still taking everything in. I have been prescribed metforman 2 x 500 mg per day - can anyone taking this medication let me know if they suffered from headaches approx. 2 hours after taking the tablets. I'm hoping this 'side effect' is short lived whilst I get used to taking the medication. Would appreciate a word or two folks. S

Many thanks Andy. I appreciate your quick response. Think I will contact GP after another week if the headaches continue. Your results are impressive. Well done. S

thanks, i would guess, and it is a guess as yet no one else has answered, that any medication could cause minor side effects (easy for me to say minor, as I'm not the one suffering) until we get used to them and this may be the case, i know metformin can cause upset tummy for some, which in some passes after a couple of weeks but not for all and they have to try a different type of met (slow release) this isn't to say you shouldn't contact your gp, this can only be a good idea, better to be safe than sorry

Make sure you take it with your meals, if you have problems with it ask for the slow release one.

Dear Shera1221,
Firstly, welcome to the diabetes forum. I'm sure that over time you will learn many thing about diabetes and how to control it best from many member on this Forum.

As for the Metformin and your headaches, well there are some people who when they go on Metformin have absolutely no problems whatsoever and no side effects to boot, however when I was eventually compelled to take Metformin I think that I must have worked my way through every possible side effect and a few more besides , including the headaches.

I'm pleased to say that the prolonged side effects fortunately did eventually all wear off, the headache problem going within a few days of starting the Metformin.

I hope this re-assures you, please feel free to ask any question as many of us have as they say - been there and done it.

Best of Luck

Most people don't seem to have headaches with Metformin, but we all react differently. I've had no side effects apart from a metallic taste lasting 6 months! I started on the Slow Release version so never had any stomach problems

NHS give completely wrong advice.
Hi Shera 1221
Please, please consider alternatives rather than begin a life of dependency on drugs......
Look at some of the online info` that is available, you can control your condition, even reverse it.
regards

Hi Sheera and welcome to the forum :)
I too got headaches with Metformin which never went away so I had to change to a different medication. There are many alternatives you could try if your headaches don't go away. I never had the famous stomach side effects thank goodness!
