Hi I am acording to my doctor type 1/type2 diabetic and fat so she want's me to go on Glucophage SR and byetta not two bothered about the sicknes but I have IBS and allso I am worred about pancreatites can any one help

Hi.
Welcome.

There are a thousand or more posts on here about Byetta and many more about Ibs.
Do a search with those words top right and all will be revealed. If you can't find specific answers there, come back and ask.

Pancreatitus
There have been rare, spontaneously reported events of acute pancreatitis. Patients should be informed of the characteristic symptom of acute pancreatitis: persistent, severe abdominal pain. Resolution of pancreatitis has been observed with supportive treatment, but very rare cases of necrotizing or haemorrhagic pancreatitis and/or death have been reported. If pancreatitis is suspected, BYETTA and other potentially suspect medicinal products should be discontinued. Treatment with BYETTA should not be resumed after pancreatitis has been diagnosed.

hope that helps.

Hi Toby and welcome to the forum.

There is a section titled "Diabetes Discussions" and in there is a topic called "Anyone Use Byetta?". There are quite a number of us on Byetta and if you have a look in the topic you will find a great deal information on the subject.

To answer your two specific points, we do have a couple of members with IBS who take Byetta. Apparently some people find that it can help because Byetta slows down the passage of food through the stomach, thereby reducing the IBS effect. On pancreatitis, just over a year ago there was a scare story in the American press about patients on Byetta getting pancreatitis. As a result the licencing authorities insisted that the packs should carry a specific warning about pancreatitis. It was only after the claims of the journalist were properly investigated it was found that people taking Byetta are 10 times less likely to suffer pancreatitis than those who don't take Byetta. It turns out it was just another newspaper scare story designed more to sell papers than to provide factual information. As the old Fleet Street saying goes, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!".

You don't need to worry about Byetta - not only is it a very safe drug but it is also one of the most effective ever produced at treating diabetes.

Hi thanks for the info it's just a bit hard to find anyone to ask about this sort of thing all I seem to get from my doctor is it's fine but no more so I went on the net and found the story in the states but nothing in the uk so I put 2&2 together and ended up scared stiff so you have been a big help thanks

HI thanks for the help the big problem were I live you are just a number two be seen every six months so I have two find out things any way I can my diabetic nurse saw me yesterday and allmost demanded I start using the byetta 5 and change my metformin to glucapage sr 1g 2 x daily so I have been abit concerned but now I have found some one to talk to it has helped

Diabetic nurse comes from the hospital to my GP and I go to the clinic at the hospital every six months

You should get good care with that combo. Still early days yet. Did they tell you to take the Glucophage with your two main meals ? That's what you should do.

Any more questions just ask. Dennis is the main man but there are quite a few of us on Byetta - it's good stuff.

Cheers
Ken

Well Toby or Colin, have a good read of anything you can find in the forum on Byetta and don't be afraid to ask if there's anything you want to know more about. We will always provide answers if we can.

Hi tobyone

I have been living with ibs for over 35 years now and at present am on Metformin SR and lantus insulin. However I am coming off the insulin and going to start on Byetta (mainly because of my weight issues) and I too have been concerned because of my ibs. I cope with the Metformin because it is SR and I have been reading the Byetta posts on these boards so that I have learned a lot before I even get going!! The DSNs are coming to see me in 10 days to start me on Byetta. The ibs more orless controls my life and I am desperately trying to change this.

Keep us in touch. Jude (56yr old female)

HI jude been on byetta for nealy two weeks and I am very pleased been to see the doc today lost 8kgs +2" off my waist great my hba1c is 6.0 BP down and my ibs seems a hell of alot better hope you are ok on the byetta had some bad pain at first but soon went by the way I found if I felt sick Just had one ginger biscquit and that helped as for the pain it does get better cheers colin

Hi Colin

8kgs, 2 inches in 2 weeks ?!! Well done - it sounds unbelievable!! I have spent years yo-yo dieting, then 18 months ago GP added Gliclazide to my metformin and I promptly put on 1stone. Then last November I had an appointment with DSN to discuss going on Byetta and they said I could not go on it because of my ibs. I was fairly disappointed but had gone to them because I need to get my sugars down so accepted it when she said she was going to put me on a long acting insulin - Lantus. Now, I have even more weight and Hb reading not moved.

I feel that I have been in a vicious circle for sometime now as with the increased weight comes increased BP (which is already bad and highly medicated!). I am hoping the Byetta will help but am trying not to think it will be a wonder drug but who knows it might be!

Have you changed your diet since you started on the Byetta? Any more info to help will be gratefully absorbed! (DSN coming to see me at home on Monday afternoon)

Well Done again. Jude 8)

Hi Jude.

You asked:

If you can look at your diet whilst on Byetta it can help to make an amazing difference.
I'm not going to tell you what diet to use. I will tell you what I do and you can draw your own conclusions.
I use a Combi Diet plan: Low Carbs/Low Fat/Low Salt/Low GI/Low Sugar. This is working extremely well for me and I have lost 2 stone in 2 months, haven't got the tape measure out yet, but I'm already having to get new clothes !

Somebody on here suggested it was just meat and leaves. Nothing could be further from the truth, it's varied, nutritious, filling and so much better than my previous so called 'Healthy Diet.' I eat loads of Fruit & Veg as well.

You will have to work out what is best for YOU, see what works when you try the changes. I am certain you will do much better.

Hope this helps.
Ken. :D

To Dennis, Colin, Ken and all other Byetta users

How long before eating do you take your Byetta? When I spoke with my diabetes nurse today she was horrified when I said that I would take the Byetta immediately before eating. She said it wont word properly if I do that. :?

Advice please. Jude

Hi jude I take my byetta 30 mins before a meal as my dsn told me it seems to help the weight loss for me and she all so said if I feel sick to nibble on some ginger bisquits it did help but that has gone for now cheers colin :D

Thanks Colin.
Not sure about the ginger biscuit though as I would probably eat the packet!! I have some ginger and lemon tea so that might be a good idea. You came off insulin and went on to Byetta didnt you? Diabetes nurse has left it to me whether or not I come straight off the Lantus - any advice?

Hi Jude,

Your DN's statement shows that she knows very little about how Byetta works. The advice that nausea can be reduced by injecting immediately before eating comes from the manufacturers, Eli Lilly. They also say that the gap between injecting and eating has absolutely no effect on how Byetta works. Personally I would give more credence to what the manufacturers say than to a nurse who seems to think she knows better than them!

I normally inject around 15 to 30 minutes before eating, but if I am eating out I inject as soon as my order has been taken, which means anything from 15 to 50 minutes before eating! In one apallingly slow restaurant, where we were getting close to an hour with no sign of our food, I had to ask for some bread just to get something in me within that 60 minute window. On that occasion our meals finally arrived after a wait of an hour and 20 minutes.
