Hi,

Just been diagnosed with type2 feeling really depressed about it. my sugar level are between 5.6 and 5.9 after a night sleep is that normal?

Hi I'm type 1, but think your morning blood sugars sound great and entirely normal. Feeling a bit depressed is probably natural as you come to terms with the diagnosis just try not to become too tied up with everything it does get easier. Take care

Azmol
Are those numbers with or without medication?
Whichever it is they are fairly good.

Hi,

Those are without the medication, doctor did not prescribed any medicine just told me to watch my diet.

I am due to see the nurse on Friday I guess she is going to give me advice and give me a quick check over.

those numbers are good for waking so you may manage your diabetes on diet alone, have a good look around the forum and ask anything u need to know, i was diagnosed type 1 at 32 so know how u feel :D

hi me too . i have just been diagnosed mine is 7.9 am trying to manage with diet alone any sugestions?lol kess

hya kess and welcome, cut out sugars/starches for a start and that should help :D

Hi

I was diagnosed 1st Jan also aged 36 my BG's were in the 18's when I was diagnosed & one month later I was in the 5's (like your figures) & had dropped 22lbs just by cutting out carbs.

Good luck with getting to grips with it... its a shock but nothing to be depressed about as long as you manage it well.

xx

Azmol,
those numbers are GREAT, especially if you're not on meds. Seems to me if you find out as much as you can about diabetes (from this site, most of all) and get yourself organised you'll be fine. You need to keep a constant watch, however.

Thing is since I have been diagnosed I get the feeling I am spaced out everytime I walk. It maybe me imagining it as I am a bit paranoide at the moment, tested myself this morning 6.1. Anyway thanks all for the advise I will take it all in an hopefully control my sugar in years to come.

Azmol - you're in a great position. It's not unrealistic to expect that you can maintain normal BG (your fasting numbers are in the normal - ie - not diabetic range) for the rest of your life. Just be aware that it is carbohydrate that increases your BG (Blood Glucose). Avoid carbs, avoid the damage that comes with elevated BG. As you get older (and have had diabetes for longer), it gets harder to control BG. Keeping carbs to a minimum now will pay dividends in years to come.

Good luck, mate!

Well according to the 'official' numbers, you are currently reading pre-diabetic or IFG impaired fasting glucose for your morning fasting numbers. This is good! Have you had any higher fasting readings - 7 or above?

What was your diagnostic history - any symptoms? You don't say, but I'm assuming you've had an OGTT - the glucose drink test to actually get diagnosed.

You are scoring about where I was when first diagnosed pre-diabetic; I lost over 100lbs in weight (are you overweight?) and it has brought all my numbers - fasting and after meals - back to normal. Fasting this morning was 4.5, last A1c (the three monthly average test you'll hear a lot about) was 4.7 - both smack in the low-normal range.

There is evidence that getting on top of it at this early stage pays dividends in that you may be able to get right back to normal numbers, so no reason to be depressed - just the reverse, in fact!

As others have said, many people find that a lower carbohydrate lifestyle helps a huge amount. Weightloss (*only* if overweight, of course) and modest exercise helps too. Essentially, building new muscle helps reduce insulin resistance and enables your body to pull excess glucose out of your bloodstream and store it properly.

Best of luck, but be wary if your nurse/doctor preaches the high carb diet at you - I was fortunate in that my doc was fully up to date about the more recent management concepts and encouraged me to go low carb. He also prescribed me low dose Metformin - later switched to Glucobay - since he is in the early interventionist camp.

Worked for me, now no meds at all and passed an OGTT. I do occasionally take Glucobay (which really is marvelous stuff for early diabetes/prediabetes) when I have the odd high-carb splurge.

Glucobay effectively mimics a lower carb / lower glycemic index diet, when you eat 'naughty' foods.

Keep us informed of your progress and - once again - don't be depressed!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for you comments.

I did have the GTT test, before the two cups of sugar water my level was 5.1 after two hours it came through at 12. Hence why my doctors said I was diabetic.

I have recently done two morning test one came through at 5.6 and the other at 6.1.

Also done couple test before eating in the evening one came through at 6.5 the other at 4.9 so my results are a bit erractic.

Seeing the nurse tomorrow for the first time tomorrow hopefully she can give me some tips.

Hey Azmol,

Re the spaced out feeling I had that for a few weeks after I was diagnosed. I was diagnosed T1 in april last year with BG of 36.
For a few weeks anything in a normal range had me feeling quite hypo, its largely what your body has grown used to though. These days I manage to run an average of around 6 and that feels fine.

Your fasting numbers are really good by the way, wish I could hit them consistently.

Stick with it, you will get used to it all and your body will get used to having proper glucose levels.

Good luck

A

Hello again Azmol.ali

I note you give the numbers for the before meal readings and wonder what the 2 hours afterwards readings are as they will be the ones which show how you are coping with what was eaten. :?

Hi Synonym,

Done one of those on Saturday in morning before eating done a test came through at 5.6 had some paster and a cup of tea went for a jog for a mile came back about two hours later done the test came through at 4.6 was suprised by the result, like I said my result seem to be a bit erractic.

OK, when I had mine at diagnosis, I was above 8 after 2hrs, but after I got my BMI from approaching 40 down to under 25, I score a 5.8

According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance_test - 12 is only just into a diabetes diagnosis, so if you have a lot of weight to lose, that and extra exercise may pull you back towards normal again.

With some people, it is the fasting that goes haywire first, with others it is the post-glucose challenge (ie after a meal or glucose drink).

The tests that most people find useful are the morning fasting and two hours after meals.

Conventional wisdom used to be '3F' Fix the Fasting First; more recently, the drive is to get after meal readings under control (the fasting then generally fixes itself).

2hrs after a meal is generally the figure that most people use, but there are some that consider 1hr more useful.

Apart from the high/low carb issue, don't let the nurse fob you off by saying that you should not do home testing - most people here find that this is the only way to work out just how your body reacts to changes in diet and make your own adjustments accordingly.

Again, best of luck and certainly don't be depressed!

That would likely be the exercise, it would be interesting to see what happens without it. Testing, testing, testing!

Went to see the nurse today, she got the impression I am on the border line of diabetees and should keep an eye on it. She thinks my GTT result came through so high because I was ill at the time, as I just came back from abroad was not feeling well with a virus.

Anyway asked to keep a note of sugar level in the morning and evening and revist her in two weeks.
