Hi all
I am new to the forum and I hope I can use this medium to pick up and indeed pass on tips and experiences.
Diagnosed T2 five years ago and was initially diet and exercise. Put on Metformin 2012 and despite best efforts I couldn't get on with it. I suffered terribly with upset stomach. Earlier this month I was prescribed Gliclizide and up to now my BS is all over the place. I hope it will settle down soon. Has anyone else had any experience like this.

Hi,
welcome to the forum,
sorry i cant help as im type 1, im sure someone will be along to help soon;)

Hi alig and welcome to the forum. Ask all the questions you like and someone will be able to help, especially on your question on Gliclizide.

Hi. Was the Metformin the SR (Slow Release) version? It is much kinder on the stomach and is the best starter drug if you have insulin resistance thru excess weight. Gliclazide is for use when your islet cells are starting to fail as it stimulates the pancreas. It is not the best drug if you are an overweight T2 so bear that in mind; you may need to have a lower dose if it is playing havoc with the blood sugar. So a lot depends on whether you are overweight or not and what the state of your islet cells are. As always have a low-carb diet to help both blood sugar and weight.

Hello Alig,

you say reading are all over the place, does that mean high, low or both. Also what dose are you on and how long you been on it.

I'm on Glic, 30mg twice a day. Initially I did drop a bit low a couple of times, but seem to have settled down a bit now. Able to run/cycle/swim for at least an hour without any adverse effects, haven't tried longer yet. It is a drug that can cause low readings and hypos, especially on higher doses, and if you do a lot of exercise.

If it doesn't settle down I'd have a word with your GP. Maybe not an appointment, but a lot of surgeries offer a booked telephone call from your GP so you don't need to take time off work etc.

Hi, The Metformin was the SR version and I was on two a day after the evening meal. Having read a number of posts on the forum it seems that most people recommend taking them mid-meal. It created a few problems in that where ever I was I had to first locate the facilities and not stray too far. I have been on the Gliclazide for a month now and my BS readings appear to be far higher than I was expecting. Having not self tested for a long while I have relied upon my Hbac1 readings twice a year. My last one was 58 (7.5 in old money) but I am now getting regular readings between 10 and 14 at varying times of the day. I am hoping it will settle down and I am due to have another review next month.
