I am type 2 and about to go on insulin on the 3rd Feb. Will be using a pen and a little apprehensive. Where is the best site to inject? I know the insulin needs to be in the fridge but where does the pen need to be stored in between injections. What is the best sugary item that needs to be carried to counter hypos? When travelling abroad are there any problems going through security with the insulin and needles? Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Before you start on Insulin you should be fully instructed by your DSN or GP on exactly what to do.How to inject, where to inject and how Insulin must be stored once opened.

What is the best sugary item that needs to be carried to counter hypos?

The recommended items for fast treatment of a hypo are, GlucoTabs/Dextrose Tabs/Jelly Babies/Lucozade/Coke/Pepsi or other sugary drinks, not Diet ! Then when levels are near normal some slow acting carby snack to stabilise the levels.

When travelling abroad are there any problems going through security with the insulin and needles?

Always make sure you have a letter from your GP regarding the items of medication and syringes etc that you will be carrying. Keep them in hand luggage, nevr in an unheated hold of an Aeroplane. It will kill the Insulin. Comply with all rules and regulations that each Airport or Carrier has shown on their website.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Hi Chris you'll find your own "best place" to inject mine is my stomach. Once out of the fridge keep your pen at room temp cold insulin nips when injected. glucotabs(from chemist) I find are best or a small carton of fresh orange or a mini can of coke. When I went abroad my doctor wrote me a letter stating I am diabetic and therefore needed to carry meds and sharps. Hope that helps
